Is it suitable to use certain household oils like say, cooking oil, instead of bike oil as a quick fix (or is it generally a bad idea) ?

..If so what oil would be suitable?

Oil of Olay, (or Ulay if the bike is pre-1999, or Olaz if the bike is from the low countries, Germany or Italy)

Does 3 in 1 count as a household oil? Because that stuff works fine.

Don't use any oil that isn't a mineral oil. I mean, don't use what is essentially fat that happens to be liquid at room temperature. So not cooking oils. 3 in 1 is a mineral oil, for example. Flora Cuisine is not.

3 in 1 is AWFUL as chain lube.Turns black almost immediately and plays havoc with jeans/socks,smooth shaven legs :-) etc

3-in-1 washes out very quickly too.

It's better than nothing, and much better than Flora Cuisine.

3 in 1 is great! if its turning black immediately, your using too much (and the chain wasn't clean before applying the lube). Apply 9 or 10 drops directly on the chain. run the chain thru all the sprockets, job done! no mess and in our current weather conditions, last longer than most.
