    Hi,

I am looking for information on what to do about trying to claim disability allowance for my son. He was knocked down when he was 7 years old but it wasn't until his mid 20's we were told he should be claiming D.A for the problems he now has.

He has trouble concentrating and remembering things aswell as nightmares and other various things.
The problem is when we brought him to his doctor he seemed quite confused about what to do. And since then me and my wife haven't known were to go from here.
We believe he may be entitled under the learning disability category but he was never diagnosed (our fault)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Information on DA can be found here. http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Disability-Allowance---SW-29.aspx

If you believe he is suitable you should complete the form and return it. It takes about 6 months for a decision but in the meantime he can go to the Community Welfare Officer for financial help.

    Hi,

I'm very sorry to hear about your son. D.A is payable when the person is unable to work due to their illness/disability and hasn't enough stamps for Disability benefit. D.A. is means tested.

Many people believe it is an allowance to help people with disabilities live/continue to work like the British Disability Living Allowance - unfortunately it isn't.

Not knowing any of your son's details, i can only direct you to

    http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/da.aspx

and hope it is of some help to you,

    Regards,
    Rose

thank you both very much for your replies and information,

I wonder if anyone could please tell me how and were I could get my son diagnosed?
After going back to the doctor he said that he can't diagnose it himself

I'm at my wits end at this stage

I'm afraid i can't help. I have a cousin with Down's Syndrome and he went to special schools etc and he gets D.A. but his problems are well documented through school and special training.

I wonder would your local Citizen's Advice office be a help. Go down to your local one and ask. Or ask your g.p. to refer your son to a social worker - if that is how it is done - i'm only guessing sorry.

I wish you all the best and hope someone more knowledgeable than me comes along with some real world advice for you,

    Regards,
    Rose
