Final year GPA

    Hi,

    So I'm a final year student, due to graduate soon. My final degree result is made up of Stage 2 examination results (so 4 semesters consisting of 6 semesters or 24 modules). I had a bad last semester and need to finish with a 2.1 overall degree. Is this possible to achieve with my current grades. (I know some are low)

    Year 2 grades: (5 is the number of credits)
    C 5 1 Stage 2
    C+ 5 1 Stage 2
    B+ 5 1 Stage 2
    B- 5 1 Stage 2
    C+ 5 1 Stage 2
    E 5 1 Stage 2
    C 5 2 Stage 2
    B- 5 2 Stage 2
    D 5 2 Stage 2
    C+ 5 2 Stage 2
    C+ 5 2 Stage 2
    B- 5 2 Stage 2

    Year 3 grades so far:
    C+ 5 1 Stage 2
    C- 5 1 Stage 2
    D- 5 1 Stage 2
    C 5 1 Stage 2
    E 5 1 Stage 2
    C 5 1 Stage 2

    I received an E, and am due to repeat that module. I will compensate the E from 2nd year.
    If I want to bring my GPA to 3.1 is this possible?

    I'm just in a predicament so need to work it out.
    Any help would be really appreciated,
    A.

    Ok, so here are the grade GPA points

    A+ = 4.2
    A = 4.0
    A- = 3.8
    B+ = 3.6
    B = 3.4
    B- = 3.2
    C+ = 3.0
    C = 2.8
    C- = 2.6
    D+ = 2.4
    D = 2.2
    D- = 2.0
    E = 1.6
    F = 1.0
    G = 0.4
    NG = 0.0

    So your grades by semester:

    Semester 1

    C 5 1 Stage 2 = 2.6
    C+ 5 1 Stage 2 = 3.0
    B+ 5 1 Stage 2 = 3.6
    B- 5 1 Stage 2 = 3.2
    C+ 5 1 Stage 2 = 3
    E 5 1 Stage 2 = 1.6

    (sum of all GPA scores, divided by 6) = 2.833

    C 5 2 Stage 2 = 2.8
    B- 5 2 Stage 2 = 3.2
    D 5 2 Stage 2 = 2.2
    C+ 5 2 Stage 2 = 3.0
    C+ 5 2 Stage 2 = 3.0
    B- 5 2 Stage 2 = 3.2

    Sum = 2.9

    Semester 3

    C+ 5 1 Stage 2 = 3.0
    C- 5 1 Stage 2 = 2.6
    D- 5 1 Stage 2 = 2.0
    C 5 1 Stage 2 = 2.8
    E 5 1 Stage 2 = 1.6
    C 5 1 Stage 2 = 2.8

    Sum = 2.467

    GPA to Date = 2.733

    A 2:1 is a minimum GPA of 3.08

    Required GPA from final semester = 4.12

    An A+ is worth 4.20 and an A is worth 4.0, so you would basically need 3 A's and 3 A+'s to just come in on 4.10, which would presumably be enough that they would give it.

    So yeah, you need 3 A's and 3 A+'s, or if those E's you have are repeated and you bring those modules up to GPA of 2.0 (which it would be capped at), then you could bring that down a small bit, maybe 4 A's and 2 A+'2 would be enough...

    Good Luck!

    Unless you are substituting that E in which case you start off with a blank canvass with that grade rather than being capped at 2.0.

    The grade will be capped as the course only offer resit exams and I'll compensate the other E which will be 2.0 also!

    Thank you so much for your reply. I'm really kicking myself because I have been given a conditional offer for a Masters at Trinity and I need 2.1.
    I am working hard to get those A's but it will be hard. Just checked my official grade transcript and it says my current GPA is 2.89. I wonder will it be possible to get it up to 3.08?

    You'd want to check how your grades are weighted. For instance, in a 3 year degree your first year may not count, your 2nd year is worth 30% and your last year is worth 70%. This varies from course to course.

    That will affect the calculation. But I'd say its possible with some hard work.

    It's weighted pending results from 12 modules in 2nd and 3rd year. So results from 24 modules, if the 2.89 is from all three years so far then I'm a bit screwed. I could bring grades up for the 2.1. I'll email the School.
