the gf has an 09 toyota auris 1.4 petrol, less than 30k kms on it.

she wants to get something diesel, preferrably a bit bigger.

has to be 2008 plus for the tax, whats economical in the 11-12k euro price range?

she wants soemthing a bit more 'stylish' too!!

i said about the 1.4 d4d auris but she wants something different.

    cheers.

How many miles p.a. will she be doing? If it's less than 10k, then it's not worth getting diesel.

How about the new shape Focus? Looks pretty cool. Or a Honda Civic?

    It's not an Auris?

Um - the OP's girlfriend didn't want an Auris.

The Focus is a Ford, not a Toyota. That's the something different...

She's done less than 30k on a petrol car assuming she has it new. If bought used, she's done less than 10k a year. Will she be doing about 20k kilometers a year? If she'll still be doing about 10k or less, then a petrol may suit her better. If a DPF needs to be replaced it would wipe out any fuel savings you will gain if doing a low amount of miles.

she only does about 10k a year roughly.

but she doesnt like having to pay 570 a year tax for the 1.4 shes driving now.

would there really be a possibility of dpf failure if mileage is not high.

Yes, and DMF failure too. Stop start traffic makes modern diesels expensive.

If she only does about 10k, then it's probably better to get petrol.

Plenty of petrol models about where the tax is lower. And she could get the same 1.4 as she has now.

Yes there is a high risk of DPF failure. The prospective repairs on these are far higher than the failed notion of saving some money on tax.

Tell her that her mileage doesnt justify diesel and that it works out cheaper to stick with a petrol in the long run.

Too much deluded diesel is the future thinking going around

Disappointing, I was expecting someone professing undying love for diesel cars and wanting to literally take a low CO2 emissions vehicle AS a girlfriend. Not all that implausible with the current horn for diesel that is afflicting people....

I have a 2.0 Turbo petrol and only pay €360ish (or whatever its changed to now) a year tax. Petrol doesnt automatically mean higher road tax.

A 3 year old Auris with just 30k km?.

Thats only 6,000 miles a year. Absolute madness buying a diesel to that mileage.

You are much better off buying a petrol.

You need to aim at the annual "cost per mile" when you factor in fuel/tax/maintenance/repairs AND depreciation. Doing that sort of mileage a petrol will be a lot cheaper to own.

Spending thousands to trade up to save a few hundred in motor tax annually will take mean it takes you a long time before you actually break even. Too many people only see the headline savings in motor tax/mpg or follow the trend or fashion, but fail to do the proper maths involved on how much it actually costs them versus how much they will save.

Possible that the car is actually 4 years so worse again. Less than 5k miles per year, if it's a Jan 2009 car for example.
