Adult Orthodontics

I have some questions about braces which I'm hoping some one might be able to with. I'm in my mid-20s and I've always been unhappy with my teeth so I've seen an orthodontist. My case is a little complicated as I have to get the orthodontics in preparation for a dental implant and so I need the traditional braces to get the roots to move as at the moment there's no room for the implant.

Before getting the braces on I wanted to enquire after the types. I can get ceramic braces which are less obvious than the traditional metal braces but the wire across is still visible. I'm wondering has anyone ever gotten the ceramic/plastic braces where the wire is clear also? If so where? My orthodontist doesn't offer that option and although it's just minor I want to exhaust all options before getting my braces on! They'll be around for 18mths so I want to make sure I'm 100% happy!

    Hi there

you can get white wires but the coating comes off after a few weeks. Lingual braces are invisible but cost a lot more.

If you are unhappy with your teeth then just get on with it and the braces will be off before you know it!

    good luck

my recommendation is that you stick with what your orthodontist recommends. Daydreamer suggests that the treatment will soon be over, and I completely agree.

My kids have orthodontics too, and they wanted clear braces but in some cases this is not possible. The danger is that you could spend so long looking for an orthodontist that can help you that you are indeed waste valuable treatment time. You could also end up going to someone who just treats you for the sake of it just to get your business.

If you trust your orthodontist then I suggest you stick with them

I'm 29 and have braces. At the moment they're only on the bottom as I got the top ones taken off to get married last year, and then got a removable piece on top to try and correct my midline. They're going back on in a few weeks though, for about another 6 months.

I had the porcelain ones on the top and will be getting them again. Honestly, the wire is very thin, especially at the beginning so you don't really notice it. Even in photos of me from the time I had them on they're not very noticeable. I've never seen anywhere with clear wires and as the poster said above, you might spend lots of time searching when you could be getting the treatment started and getting the 18 months over with!

You get little elastic bands around each piece of porcelain and the orthodontist should have clear ones of those. Some kids get different colours on theirs to be trendy but I wanted mine to be as discreet as possible so always got clear bands.

Best of luck anyway - they really are worth it :)
