A though one to describe this but i'll give it a bash. 2002 focus btw

so if I walk up to the door and just pull the handle the door wont open. There is a little knack to it. I have to slide the handle right as far as it goes and then pull, but it will only work if I do it with x amount of force. any harder or or lighter will not work.

Does anyone have a clue as how I go about fixing this? Will I need an entire new door handle?

It's just the cable that has come loose. The door card will need to be taken off to fix it. That's the only labouring part of the job though.

There is adjustment on the actuator rod for the latch mechanism but you need to remove the latch and handle to adjust it. It is a very fiddly job.

The cable is only for the interior handle though, sounds like the OP is having trouble with the exterior handle?

It will most likely be the issue I mentioned above in that case. When you pull the door handle a rod pushes down on the latch mechanism to open the door. The top section of this rod where it is attached to the door handle is threaded so you can screw it downwards so it pushes further down on the latch when you pull the handle. Adjusting the mechanism like this should sort your problem.

If you are going to tackle it yourself I would advise either finding a good how-to guide on the internet or else invest in a Haynes Manual. It will save you a lot of hassle as it is not immediately obvious how the handle and lock are put together. There is also an anti-theft plate covering the mechanism inside the door that can be very difficult to remove.

It's about 30-40 minutes work for someone who is familiar with them so it won't cost you too much even if you do end up paying someone to do it.
