howdy folks, just lookin for some advice re heart rate monitors. im looking for a decent, reasonably priced hrm that i can use for running and cycling. there seems to be so many makes/models to choose from, and never having used one before im looking for suggetions/ recomendations for particular ones. also what should i look out for when buying one?

this caught my eye, just wondering is it any good?

If you are going to properly 'use' it - as distinct from 'think it might be cool to have one', then my only advice is to choose a good one from a reputable manufacturer, such as the Polar one you linked to, or Garmin. In my experience, the cheapo ones from Lidl/Aldi etc tend to be less accurate and that can both frighten and flatter you at the same time.... :o
Fortunately, testing the accuracy of a HRM is an easy thing to do.

cheers mate, id like to get a decent one, not a cheap "that'll do for now" one...ie..aldi/lidl one.
the above linked one dosnt seem to come with a chest strap, does this hinder its performace/functions?
are ones with chest straps better?

Read this if you are getting started with HR training, I think its the most concise I've seen:

FT1 does have a strap. It's the most basic Polar HRM out there, it gives basic feedback with no options on uploading or storing sessions.

I've replied to your post in the Triathlon forum with a little more info.
