How much of a factor does the law have on your driving? If there was a week where there would be no repercussions for your driving, how differently would you drive?

I would drive faster on national roads where in my opinion it its safe to do so if I was being honest. Prob sit around 80/90 mph. Prob over 100 on motorways.

The fact I don't do this tells me the system we have works.

    I wouldn't change my attitude to drink driving/mobile phones/parking.

    What about you?

Most heaps on Irish roads atm would have a stopping distance of 1 mile or more at thos speeds.

+Most people seem to struggle to go even 50mph on main national routes from what i can see.

I drive using common sense regardless of the law, If a situation like you described happened then I might drive 10/20 faster on a clear flat road with plenty of visibility but would not change my driving style drastically.

Area in which I mainly drive is pretty much free from speed camera and garda checkpoints, so I'm not bothered with them anyway.
I drive like I feel is safe, which is very often way above the speed limit.

When I drive to more civilised places, where chances of meeting speed camera or garda are more realistic, I generally adhere to all limits.

However when I was in Poland over Christmas and new year, and I knew that no penalty point apply to me, and fines are relatively small, I didn't bother too much with obeying speed limits, and unfortunately got caught twice speeding by policeman with handgun. I was 30km/h over the limit once and I had to pay 25 euro fine. Other time I was about 20km/h over the limit, and after chatting to policeman, he let me go.

Generally then - yes - Irish speed camera system works for me, as in places where they are I adhere to the limits usually, while normally I wouldn't.

I would drive faster on the motorway. In fact, I did drive faster on the motorway until I picked up 2 points, and I have slowed down since.

The main reason that I dont drive 100mph on a motorway is the fear of getting caught. I drive a car that is well able for it and many stretches of motorway are perfectly safe for that speed.

On smaller roads I probably wouldnt drive much differently than I do already; not many roads that I drive on regularly would be safe to go much past 55-60mph even if I wanted to.

    The same here. :)

Like most people, probably a bit faster on the motorway (where I'm usually a bit over the limit anyway when not trapped by lane hoggers), but otherwise I wouldn't change that much. I'm too old for boy racing these days.... :)

Doesn't really work then does it? If people only slow down if they think they'll be caught. Not arguing, just saying! And I'd say many, including myself, would take the same opinion.

But here's the opposite, if speed cameras could be everywhere (Which is possible, Garda van can be anywhere) would that change your thinking?

But that's the way all rules work.

You will follow them only if you know there is a (strong) possibility you can be caught, if you know what I mean. ;)

Is there any way of telling where the garda set there speed traps? I was on the R147 Navan to Dublin road last Night( Tuesday the 19th), when I say a flash but did not see a van or a fixed camera. Now I am left waiting to see if the postman arrive with a letter:confused:

As far as I'm aware they use an infra red flash so you wouldn't have seen it as infra red light is invisible to the human eye.
