Taxes with online shopping

I got charged €104 for duty and VAT when I purchased some clothes from the neimanmarcus.com. The total for the clothes was €287. €104 seems a bit much for this value. But more importantly.. I don't think I can ever remember getting charged Duty & VAT before. Is it something that hppens only on ocassion when they do a spot check?

I usually shop on yoox.com and raffaello-network and never get charged for this. Is it just something that may happen every once in a while if you are unlucky? I want to buy a new garment from neimanmarcus and am afraid that I might have to pay an extra €100 again

Good. I think it is the luck of the draw regarding taxes.

    You are great at advertising.

    Buy Irish is my advice.

Technically you should be paying the tax every time but like you pointed out they do spot checks and some things slip through the net.

When you take all these charges into account when ordering into Ireland it is often almost, or more expensive than buying it through an Irish supplier and letting them pay the charges, which will be lower for them.

    VAT is 23% (usually)
    Import tax is 17% (usually)

In both cases there are exceptions.

If the value of the package is under 22 euro then VAT is not charged. If the value of the package is under 150 euro then Import tax is not charged.

The issue is that VAT is charged on the total cost, which includes import duty. So if you buy something at 100 quid and are charged 30 quid import tax (just making these figures up), then you will pay VAT on the 130, not the 100.

Usually things must slip through the 'net' at least 90% of the time so. You think that they would make sure that they'd get everything since it would be easy money for the government

You pay taxes on importing goods from outside the EU. Yoox is based in the EU so you will never be charged additional taxes on those goods, Neiman and Marcus is outside the EU. Also you will be less likely to be charged for items under €100 I have found, anything over €150 is likely to be charged.

VAT is raised on the value of the goods plus the postage paid. And if there are customs charges they are levied on the new total. If you enquire with Customs best not mention the other consignments you got as they may ask you to submit the details for assessment.

Quite possible. The one good thing about getting stuff from China is they'll write some ridiculously low value on the package so you can avoid the tax.
