Reasons behind Rough Pints

    Hi there,

Why exactly is it that pubs like An Brog in Cork and McTurcaills serve consistently sub-standard pints? In both shops, draught beer tends to have no head on it after a few seconds and tastes awful compared to the same draught beer in many other establishments. Their pints are about 3 euro rather than 4.50+ you pay for a nice one btw.

    What do ye think?

Dirty glasses, poorly maintained beer lines, poorly rotated stock.

Those microetched glasses can kill the head quickly too.

And cos people are willing to pay for substandard beer.

Too clean glasses as well believe it or not. Too much detergent will kill the head, and I find brand new glasses go flat quicker. An 'aged' glass with plenty of scratches hold head better.

    Shorter lines = better pints.

So I was lead to believe.

sub standard beer can be caused by quite a few things but mostly low volume sales and poor stock rotation, keeping the beerlines clean isnt as much of a problem as years ago in fact most brewerys clean their own lines pubs now, but yes the distance between the tapping head and the tap does affect the quality, longer the lines the more time the beer is sitting in the lines.

poor heads are caused by a number of factors, low gas, dirty glasses, too much detergent, contamination by milk, crisps etc. milk is a killer, if a milk glass or cup gets put into a glasswasher without being washed properly first it can contaminate every other glass going thru the machine until its cleaned out. crisps and nuts are allmost as bad, dip a crisp in a pint of lager and watch the head dissapear.

nucleated glasses were invented as a way to try keep the heads longer in glasses, they work in a similar way to coke and mentos, just not as extreme ( thank god lol)
