I'm fairly impressed with the advert - it's great to see the 1.5m passing space being clearly called out.

A sensible, reasoned portrayal of cyclists on television? Was this a condition of the bailout?

and not everyone was covered in hi-viz amazing

AND it very clearly shows a group riding two abreast so hope that clears another misunderstanding up

Well done rsa. Very reasonable add. Might help to stop people trying to get a close as possible to my handle bars when passing out

I liked how they showed the cyclist swerving slightly because of the ball... not a pothole in sight on Irish roads! :D

I expect to see this appear on AH very soon with an indignant OP and a comment, "Why isn't there a video telling cyclists not to break red lights".

Probably due a vid like that. I did a rare cycle across town the other week. Plenty of red light breaking going on from cyclists.

Really? All cyclists I saw, bar one (the lady in red with the sinister smile turning right), were wearing some class of high visibility item, or were in a bunch with other hi-viz riders. Or maybe I just didn't see all the non-hi-viz ones. :pac:

On the plus side, it's nice to see a balanced approach to the helmet question.

Pity also that they couldn't get the parked driver to open his car door with his left hand, but I guess fully safe door opening isn't on their radar just yet.

It's an improvement, but it's far from perfect.

+1 Cycled thru town early yesterday. As it was a bank holiday, very little traffic about. Twice cycling thru a junction with a green light, I almost collided with another cyclist breaking a red light ! nutters!

Aye, an awful lot of hi-vis and brightly coloured clothing in there.

What's the significance of the hand used to open the door?

Using your left hand forces you to look over your shoulder before opening the door? (thats my guess)

I think it's a good ad. I saw it on TV last night and let out a roar when the family were half asleep! Great ad and I hope it will result in less hassle for riding two abreast. Well done RSA. I think they must be praised, whatever about people saying it's flawed or not perfect, you'll always get that. I just think it's good to increase awareness of cyclists amongst motorists, and if it results in people thinking twice before blowing the bejaysus out of their horns at cyclists or overtaking too close, then it's a good move in my opinion. It's good that our voices are being heard somewhere!!

.......although, based on the number of Irish people who still refer to yards, feet, inches, miles, stones etc. I'd be concerned that many won't have a clue what 1.5 metres is.

As 07Lapierre says, using the inside hand (left for driver's side, right for passenger side) is a belt-and-braces way of checking the coast is clear by forcing the over-the-shoulder check. It's obviously good to see him checking his mirror before opening his door, but it would have been even better if he'd checked his blind spot too.

We're nit-picking the ad at an exceptionally pedantic level, which I think tells us that this is an uncharacteristically fair and informative ad from the RSA.

Now let's hope they actually show it regularly rather than once a night for two weeks.

None of the motorists. I was thinking of writing in and complaining.

Credit where credit's due. Excellent ad. Delighted that they covered off on cycling 2 abreast. Given the number of cyclists on the road at present, the ad is badly needed.

Thos lads out on the group spin are dressed terribly!

On balance though a good ad, if a bit simple.

On the 2 abreast issue. Glad to see that. I hope the contrary motorist that tried to run us off the road between Navan and Trim on Saturday gets to see it. He nearly ran into the ditch himself with all the beeping and gesticulating..

From my experience today it must of been on every second ad break, hopefully that continues.

Where are these cyclists as shown? A cyclist with a bell? Cyclists signalling their intent to change lanes?

This is a road safety advertisement, not a documentary. It's portraying the ideal, for obvious reasons.

Not Carlow anyway, looks more west to me, like Galway or Mayo.

Walking Tours of Kilkenny in English, French or German.

I know with the check your door when opening part is definitely castlebar as I've been on that road several times when I'm down that side of the country.

I had to contact the RSA about my licence I was given an address in Ballina, so maybe they were filming around Ballina/Castlebar?

The urban scenes were filmed in Castlebar. Newport Road and Market Square respectively. The rural scenes are on the Claremorris - Balla - Castlebar stretch of the N60. Im from the area so the locations were instantly recognisable. The "sinister" lady on the bike is a bit of a darling in Castlebar, I dont know her personally but by all accounts she is meant to be lovely. She has been cycling around the town for the last 60 years and even won some kind of award for it!

It would be harder to pass that pack of cyclist than an articulated truck. Nice to see cyclists using hand signals for a change thou.

that's part of the point, you actually have to consider it and make an effort. if they were all single file people would overtake way to close without a thought about location or suitability. You'll also be overtaking for a short time / distance than if they were strung out in single file.
