    Hi,

Am I correct in thinking you cant tax a car until after the ownership has officially changed ?

Just bought a 2008 car which is out of tax and wondering what the easiest way is - not sure if it can be done online or for the first time do you have to go to the office to verify the actual sale date or something ?

Car is untaxed in the garage since last Nov so obviously I'm only liable for tax from March onwards.

    Thanks,
    Declan.

Wait for logbook to come back, bring it to tax office.

Possibly you can check on motortax.ie that it has gone through and go to tax office without log book, I'm not sure if this will work.

Afaik, you have to go in personally the first time, after that they'll send you notifications with pin for online payment.

Hi sorry we were wondering the exact same thing, just got a second hand car today and it currently has no tax. As my boyfriend is working I was going to go to the tax office tomorrow for him but the dealer said they wouldn't give us the old car's log book and that he was transferring it online tonight so if I go in tomorrow will I be able to just hand over the filled out form (RF100A)?

Also does this form need to be stamped by the Garda for a declaration of non use? It's a long journey for me to do tomorrow so I kinda want to know they won't just turn me away tomorrow when I finally get there and queue up!

You are only liable for tax from the begining of the month that registration transfers to you. Anything before that is not the new owner's concern.

If the dealer is transfering ownership online then check below to see if ownership changes over. When it is dose then you should be able to request a new PIN and be able to tax the car online without having to go into the motor tax office.
