If he's a good boy he's out in 5. Max sentence is 10 years

    Doesn't seem right does it?

    RIP Nicola

Hope he does the full 10 stretch, deserves life but that's the maximum sentence they could have given him.
Prison life for foreigners in Japan is hard but I have zero sympathy & hope every day is hell for him,I listened to the reports on the case on The Last Word including the interview with Nicola's father, some heartbreaking stuff.

The other guy that was with Hinds is serving 3 years & got caught with evidence of another assault on a different woman on his ipad.

Disgusting but not unexpected sentence, they should both rot in Hell.

That sentence is crazy. He took a young girls life and will only have to spend a few short years in jail. He'll still be a young man with his whole life ahead of him when he gets out. Very unfair. RIP Nicola.

If he had been tried in Ireland as an adult and given life, he could possibly be out in seven years. Justice seems to have taken a back seat in the modern world. Natural justice, hopefully, will see some Sumo type take a liking/disliking to him.

And apparently the 'hard labour ' in Japanese jails is spent working for commercial companies , assembling car panels / phones for Nissan / Nokia .

Only consolation is that the verdict will bring a sense of closure to the Furlong family . - RIP Nicola

I've changed the title of the thread as in fairness, he deserves to be known for what he is.

    Scum.

Disgusting how this low life could kill such a beautiful girl and all he gets is 5-10 years jail.

But we have had a similar verdict a few weeks ago closer to home.
In Enniscorthy you can be found guilty of starving your mother to death in her bed and the courts will take 7 years to reach a verdict with millions of tax payers € wasted on the case and all you will get is 240 hours community service and told to stay sober in public.

Agreed - it's pathetic, we could learn a thing or two about the efficiency of the courts system in Japan (not necessarily the sentencing mind).

6 lay judges and 3 professional judges also seems to work very very well.

    Our system sucks in comparison.

Had he been tried as an adult he'd have gotten a worse penalty no doubt.
