    Can anyone explain...
I can get RTE1+1 on technomate combo box but my lg tv has the "programmes begin at 7...etc" message...it went just after 1 a.m.

I assume you're referring to these on-screen captions when the channel is off-air. These are MHEG-5 software captions generated within the receiver from data sent in the TV signal but will only be displayed if the receiver has the necessary on-board MHEG-5 software.

MHEG-5 software is also used to display RTÉ Aertel on Saorview.

So if the receiver is MHEG-5 capable you will see the off-air captions mentioned above and Aertel on the RTÉ channels, if not then no Aertel and no on-screen captions.

Your LG TV appears to have the necessary software and the Techomate receiver doesn't. All Saorview approved receivers will be MHEG-5 capable as it's a mandatory part of the Saorview approval specification, non-approved receivers may or may not have it.

RTÉ1+1 and RTÉjr share the same transmission channel and when one channel is on-air the on-screen caption is generated for the other channel rather than leaving a blank screen. On RTÉ1+1 after shutdown the on-screen caption may not appear as the channel is not required for RTÉjr until the following morning and it keeps control of the capacity until then eventhough no programmes are transmitted.

Yes that's it....thanks... was just a bit strange i was watching a programme and the on screen caption came up before the programme ended..when i changed channel the programme would appear for a few seconds and the the caption...so i went to the other tv with the technomate (no mheg5) and could watch the end of it Cheers

That shouldn't happen, a problem at the RTE end.

Perhaps you should send then a email to make them aware of the problem - http://www.saorview.ie/contact/.

I wondered that also. It seems as if RTE1+1 could continue easily for another few hours each night. They should at least cut it off at the end of a show. They may use the capacity at say 3am for sending software updates etc, but why cut off a show at 1am for no good reason?

According to the OP the programme was only cut off on his MHEG-5 tv when the MHEG-5 on-screen caption appeared but continued without problem on his non-MHEG-5 Technomate receiver.

A problem on the RTÉ end I guess, sending something in error that triggered the MHEG-5 on-screen caption to appear eventhough the channel was still on-air.
