    Hi Guys

Have two pc's one with visto and one with xp.

Im looking to upgrade to windows 7 and get Office 365,

Whats the best way to do it and will all the files and software still be there after the up grade or would I be better hiring an IT guy for an hour or two to do it. Any help or advice would be great as I wouldnt be the most confident person when it comes to IT stuff.

    Cheers

Unless you've already bought upgrade licences for Windows 7, you'll have a hard time finding them. Windows 8 is what everyone's selling at this point.

In either case, you're most likely better off with a clean new install of Windows 7 and a migration of your user account(s), files and settings from the source machine - this is more time-intensive, but generally leads to a better-performing machine. You need to make very sure that you've got backups of everything you might need from the old machines before you wipe the disks for the reinstallation.

What are the specifications like on the current machines? It may be a case that you'd be as well of getting two new machines rather than just upgrading them to Windows 7 (if, as pointed out, that's even still an option).

Office 365 is really straight forward and, if you're only getting it for the office suite as opposed to hosted e-mail, you only need one license as it covers five machines.

There's a thread in Bargain Alerts at the moment offering Windows 7 licenses for €40

I'm not sure how willing I would be to trust someone selling branded OEM copies of a previous-gen OS, to be honest. Even an unbranded OEM copy is still kinda dodgy licencing-wise, even if for home users it's unlikely to be an issue.

Selling them for less than their original cost too. Dodgy.

hi guys thanks for the answers. i have included the spec of one of the pc's below.

I was looking at that offer alright for €40 for windows 7 or I can still get an upgrade.

I would prefer not to get two new pc's yet if at all possible as I have other items I need to get first.

That'll be fine for Windows 7. One thing I would be concerned about though, that's a what 4-5 year old computer, would be the HDD, that's about the time they start to fail, particularly in a business environment. Once you have proper backups though you'll be fine.
