I am only starting to use and learn Photoshop. I want to use stacking techniques for night time photography. Which version of Photoshop woud be recommended. I have a trial period with Lightroom 4, but it doesnt seem to have the stacking function

Photoshop Elements is probably what you're after but you could also do the same thing with The GIMP. I prefer photoshop but the GIMP is free so it's pros and cons really.

Photoshop has had layers and blending modes for years so any version will give you multiple ways to stack your images.

If you're using some modern script such as Dr Browns Stackamatic, you will need at least version CS5/CS6 as far as I know.

You could try Lynda.com for video tutorials. Deke McClelland's stuff is great and up-to-date. Get the $37.50/month option which includes exercise files and access to 100s of PS and other tutorials.
