Immersion question

I moved into a rented house about a month ago with a gas boiler for the central heating and an immersion in the hot press. The immersion has been switched to on and sink since i moved in. I'm no plumber but as far as i am aware this should mean there should be a small amount of hot water all the time since i moved in. I have also tried with the switch set to bath, However i have never had hot water unless i turn on the gas boiler. i assumed this meant that the immersion was faulty in some way but a couple of neighbours have the same situation (its a group of 20 houses, all identical) Is it possible that the houses were built with the immersions disabled or could they all be faulty after only a few years.

I know nothing about plumbing or electrical fixings but any advice would be appreciated. I am attaching pics of the hot press with the immersion switch and the pipes if that is of any use.

More than likely the overheat stat has tripped. If you remove the silver cover on top of the immersion you will see the thermostat on it is a reset button push it down to reset.Make sure you turn the power off to the immersion

Thanks very much for the quick reply I will try that later after the little one goes to bed and let you know how it goes.

Thanks a million mate. That worked perfectly, I have it on now and I have plenty of hot water. Just out of interest what is your opinion on leaving the immersion on all the time as opposed to turning it on when you need it.

I would turn it on as its needed. With the overheat stat tripped if it happens again the stat might need replacing as the stat could be faulty

you should also turn down the cylinder stat too as sometimes the central heated hot water will trip the high limit stat in the immersion
