We hope to go for planning in Kildare in the next month or 2.. Our architect is fairly confident we'd get the planning. If we did we'd hope to start building this time next yr. at the moment we are rentin (€900/month), we have been offered an unwanted mobile home to put on the site. We have a medium size dog,and a 14 week old baby. The mobile is in 'okay' condition, there is just a gas fire in the sitting room and then we would have to add electrical heaters etc.. Would you/have you taken this route and is it much cheaper? Any advice appreciated!!

Hi. A construction site is no place for a 14 week old baby... Noise/dust/all the obvious hazards

Personally I wouldn't do it. However, if you do decide to go down this route you will need to check with the contractor first. I can't imagine too many contractors (and their insurance companies) being too happy about that arrangement.

I did a house in carlow recently and the lad was living there with his missus, 2 dogs and a 2 year old in a mobile home.

The pro's for him was that he could tip away at it in the evenings and weekends but the biggest was the security side. Twice he had the hi-ace brigade in and twice he ran them. He told me another local house wasn't as lucky and lost copper, lead and scaffolding.

I suppose it's your own choice at the end of the day.

I did the 'mobile' for 9 months while building.

I went the ''direct labour'' route so it was great for early morning deliveries, site meetings, and keeping an eye on everything, plus the missus kept everyone going with Bacon Butties.

Problem was the mobile was freezing, and noisy, as in wind.

At first I had visions of moving it to a site in Wexford for holidays, at the end I could not wait to get rid of it.

It had a gas fire, and I installed electric convector heaters in the Bed's and Bath'rm...... no use the skin is so thin, it's freezing.

My eldest 19 at the time, his feet stuck out the bedroom door while in bed,

only plus, saved a fortune in rent, and I sold it for a profit
