Water floats on top so just dont let the tank empty below the outlet. to be sure. The only other way is to drain down the tank but its not worth the effort

Water goes to the bottom of your tank and yes it can cause damage.it can break or shorten the life of your oil pump.its not a big job to take it out.you need water detection paste and a pump .your service guy should have these.

Water sinks. The problem you have is after a fill it mixes it all up.

    Much oil in the tank?

It will settle and rest at the bottom

oil and water don't and won't mix, you just have to let them settle as Crock rightly says.

Water detection paste can be used, simply streak a little on a dip stick, place into the tank until it touches the bottom, and the paste changes color when it contacts water to indicate the level under the oil. If found, a good service tech (like Crock) will drop a suction line to the bottom of your tank to remove the water without having to drain your tank. The purge the oil line and clean/replace inline filter and clean the burner pump filter.

Afterwards would be recommended to put in a 'water hog' to soak up any small amount of water still in the tank over the next few months (approx 3)

NOTE: Any water removed is considered 'oil contaminated waste' and will need to be correctly disposed of, NOT DOWN A DRAIN!
