Stair carpet using a rug

Instead of using a standard carpet or stair runner on my stairs and landing I've been looking into the idea of taking a few rugs and chopping them up to use. This opens up a world of colours and shapes to use on the stairs.

So can it be done? What do I need to look out for in a rug, besides matching the pattern at the join, to make sure it can be done? Does it need to be one continuous length from the bottom of stairs to the top or can it stop and start at some point?

What if I wanted to do each step a different colour? Is this possible?

Best best is probably to go into a carpet shop and chat to them but just wondering if it had been done before and what the pitfalls are.

I saw this done in a magazine about a year ago. They had used striped rugs from Ikea and joined them together. I tore out the clipping, but can't find it now.

It looked really, really good. For them it was a cost effective option of getting a stairs runner.

I'm not sure of the pitfalls, etc, but it did look fairly easy. They appear to have simply stitched the rugs together and laid them on the stairs the usual way.

Upon the subject of chopping up carpet,

my drunken mate spilled some black hair dye on my carpet and having read that it is impossible to remove, Im wondering about cutting carpet from the bedroom and replacing the stained parts in the hall with it. It doesnt seem to budge from the floor though, I'm thinking heavy duty glue was used?

My house mates have left multiple little passive-agressive notes threatening me over the deposit which wont be given back if I dont fix the problem.

    Any help? :D

If you have a spare piece larger than what you need to replace, fit that over the stain and cut through both layers of carpet. This will mean that both pieces are exactly the same size and shape making the replacement fit exactly.
