I bought a pair of dhb m1.0 shoes from wiggle and some spd m520 pedals. Delighted with both so far. I bought mtb shoes as I found them easier to walk in.

I started out with shimanos . I'd say look and shimano are the two most common pedals/clips with a whole range of shoes, mavic, NW, shimano, diadora etc etc

Changed couple of years ago to look keo pedals with north wave shoes and find them fairly good for my wide feet.

You don't need super expensive stuff but I wouldn't under buy either, once leisure cycle and sportive bug catches you will be out the whole time.

MTB bike type shoes and pedals are better if you never plan to race.
