Got out yesterday for the opening day of the season. Despite the cold weather there were plenty of people out fishing. I managed 4 fish on a pheasant tail nymph and lost a few more as well was good to get out again.

    Lovely looking wildy there mate
I through in first cast at first light and hooked nice trout on silver mepps 1 but not landed same as next 3 fish. Hooks were bent for some reason but fixed problem and carried on.
From half six to 9 I caught and landed 13 fish from bout 3/4 lb to 2 lb ( most in around 1lb mark ) and can't even count the amount that hook didn't set in the mouth
All released bar 2 for pan
Had a wildy bout same size as yours go for the mepps aswell
Was good morning for me considering weather but very annoying morning as regards people on river which I won't get into on this but I will be contacting head secretary regarding the issue
Lack of bailiffs on the day is one issue

Seems like a good day out Dodderangler were most of the fish stockies or were they wild ones? Lost the big one on the fly which I presume was a stockie.

Not just day one I saw a few fishing it on the Saturday, when i mentioned that they were a day early, I was promptly told where to go, between them they had five or six fish on the bank.

    Classified information :)
Haha very good :) I've had a few nice ones, a couple of around 2lbs and a few smaller ones.

The weather has been terrible the last couple of days. I was out in it yesterday and it was not enjoyable to say the least. The water is very murky.

    How do I upload pics?

I do it with the iPhone
Download a app called snap bucket and upload the pics from phone onto it
Then join photobucket and the pics will automatically go to that and then copy and paste img code

I'd say with the weather being how it is there's still plenty of fish
I was out on Monday and caught six and lost a beaut when I tried taking him up a wall
    Must get a net

Good find the fish will be hugging the bottom in that I'd say.

One of the few fish I got today there was a small hatch of olives and managed a few on the dry fly as well.

There was some good fishing over the last few days with a great hatch of olives coming off the water. The fish were taking the hatching flies from the surface with some acrobatic dives. Managed seven fish with one nice earlier yesterday morning.

Took up fishing at the start of the season and have found the dodder to be the perfect starting point, it's local, easily accessible and €10 for license is well worth it, being really enjoying it and have found a few good reliable spots since march, having plenty of luck on the olive nymphs, they seem to work well, Iv had couple nice browns on them:)

Caught a nice half pounder on a butcher today before balls bridge.

However I cant get over the destruction to the river after balls bridge. All the small wild brownie fishing has been destroyed down to the dart station. All the pools have been filled in. Just flat all the way.

So much for flood defense. I hope they restore the river back to the way it was before 1986 while they have that heavy plant there. You could catch flatfish just after balls bridge on rag-worm. How ever I don't think they will do that.

That's fcuk all to them. Add at least 5k on there and restock the river. Clean it out a bit aswell. Starting to get bad again from firhouse upwards.
Up near the forests were the river runs through is a disgrace.
Cans, burnt out bikes and cars, rubbish all over aswell.

At least its a conviction. The dodder anglers will get help restocking. And hopefully it will help deter people from polluting the River Dodder.

Looking to try my hand at the dodder this season after a few unsuccessful mayfly sessions on lough Ree over the last couple of years. Yet to catch a fish on the fly. Could anyone recommend flies and sizes etc for the start of the season please. Living in Old Bawn so I figure the dodder be a good place to learn the ropes. Only interested in catch and release by the way

Plenty of info on flies there.

I find in the early season fishing with pheasant tail and hares ear nymphs work well. If there are olives hatching when it warms up a bit as well you could try a general olive pattern something like this works well for me. Some different shades of that fly will work as well.

Actually does anyone have an idea when the fish passes that were proposed for the Dodder could be put in?

Often wondered it myself but knowing this country its been swept under the rug for a while . More important things to sort out like what stupid monument to build and stuff.

Thanks. Would I be right in saying when fishing nymphs use a sinking line and with the olives use floating lines or does it make a difference?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 870 ✭✭✭jack01986

I use a floating line for 90% of my fishing so no real need for the sinking line on the Dodder in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

Not deep enough for sinking line tbh

Not to sure about this, it's a great wild brown trout river, add Salmon par and Sea trout to the mix might harm the brown trout mix.

Then you'd now need to be a member of the club, which is so cheap that I join every year even if I might only get to fish it half a dozen times.

I'm sure there are a lot like me who join but hardly ever fish, that's a great source of revenue for the club and keeps the cost down for everybody while still allowing then to do things.

If this goes ahead I'd now need a salmon and sea trout license. All the very casual members like me would drop put of the club and they would lose out.

One day when I've more free time I might get back in to fly fishing more often.

You would only need the state licence if you were fishing for the salmon and sea trout. I don't think the river would even be open for fishing for these species.

Sea trout will take dry fly just a quick as brownie

Yep but you wouldn't be targeting them normally while fishing the dry fly. Just put it back and no harm done.
