Advice: Cost efficient, modern heating system?

A friend has a converted Jubilee cooker/stove. It uses kerosene only (originally it was solid fuel and is from the 1960s). It's costing her, she estimates, €2300 per annum. It heats the room that it's in (the house has no central heating), the room above it (with the rising heat) and she gets hot water across the whole house from it. Around 60% of her food is cooked on it; the gas cooker (on a cylinder) cooks the rest.

During the summer that room is far too hot, even when it's at its lowest. She's afraid to turn it off fully because it's too hard to light the Don Burner with a match once she tries to start it up again and the service guy would have to be called out (more money).

Would anybody have recommendations for a smarter, more efficient, modern heating system for her? Cost is of course important so what sort of money would she be expecting to pay? Thanks.

I'm afraid a Don burner will never heat a house. Great for hot water and a bit of cooking. Sounds like it is being used on high fire to heat the house which is why it is costing a lot to run. It should be only using about 1/2 to 1 fill per year if it is being used as it was intended.
Also learn how to de-coke the burner. It is a simple process & change the wickes regularly. They are stocked in Heatmerchants or on-line.
To be honest, I have a soft spot for Don burners, a wonderful simple unit.
Best option would be to install an independent heating system for the space heating of the home. Many options available there.
