    as i qualify i will have my trade qualifications i also did 2 years of night courses in cit in cork in ;
automotive electrical engineering (beginner intermidate and advanced levels)
Also in automotive motor car engineering (beginner intermidate and advanced levels)
these couses gained me a simi tecnitions cert
i have my full car license and prov rigid licence and hope to have full bus, rigid and artic licence by november

i always wanted to be a lecturer but wanted to work in the trade first so i would have good on the work experience as there are the people i have met along my way that have thought me the most and i have had the upmost respect for

i am finding it unbelievably had to find any info on what route i should take to become a lecturer as i can see the FAS sceme collasping and another training body in charge of the apprentices so i would like to be in the running of gaining a job with such a firm

I'm not sure exactly what you want to lecture in but try getting a degree?

Perhaps you mean that you want to be a teacher/trainer as a lecturer is usually someone who is pursuing an academic career-degree, masters, Phd

Is it that you want to do what your teachers/trainers are doing??

Maybe ask them what route they took/what qualifications/experience they have in order to be able to teach/train in your area.

Sounds good to have a plan & a career goal - looks like you have lots of brains & are interested in development & education ; fair dues to you.

fAS may be able to offer some guidance & perhaps set you on the right path to a career choice that will end you up as a lecturer.

You could probably qualify for a back to learning grant & look to apply as a " mature student" ( you should get a grant) to train as a primary school teacher . They are crying out for men as role models. You could also look to apply under the same scheme to build on from your evening courses & Do a degree . Then you could do a teacher training qualification after that which would qualify you to apply for teaching jobs in secondary schools in those specific areas.

If it was teaching the subjects at night classes you were looking for you could apt to the VEC 's or organisations: however it is likely that they would want someone either with long service in the industry ( working ) to be able to deliver the classes .

Sounds like technology is your strong point & you enjoy learning & are ambitious. Why not also look at the different courses in the institutes of technology - you might kind a similarly themed course that sounds of interest that you could focus on; with a long term
Aim of lecturing in it or getting a teaching assistant ( starter level university role) when you finish.

    Best of luck!

You are correct that the FAS training function will be moved to new Education and Training Boards from the Summer.
Whilst FAS trainer traditionally do not need a degree to teach, they do need extensive industry experience and a training qualification. You'd need a further 10 years under you belt unless you get very lucky.

thanks for your replies very helpful. Unfortunately time is running out for me now as november is getting closer everyday.
I plauged my instructors for info on how to get into fas in a postion that they are in but all of them entered the company 10 years ago in the boom time when there was not much competition for a job of its nature. And couldnt tell me a direction to go
@ still waters - what is the new layout going to be is it going to just be the same organisation under a different name with the same staff or a total change ?
@Just a thought - im not really interested in the primary school teaching end as i already have a brother and sister working as primary teachers. your points were all helpful but i just want something that is related to the trade im interested in so therefore i could pass that enthusiasm onto who ever i would teach. would the IT courses actually lead you to a job like i want do you think do you know what roles that people take up once qualified ?
im also considering moving to canada for work also out in the big bad world

    Hi timmy

Just a little feedback regarding FAS. It is impossible to get into FAS directly as a trainer-they aren't taking any on and a significant amount of training is being outsourced. I'm lucky enough to have gotten some FAS training work recently but it was as a sub-contractor to a company that had tendered for and won a contract to provide training.

    Hop that helps

Keep your eye on the course in CIT and FAS and the other VEC's and colleges around the place.

They generally employ Part-Time lecturers and generally from a pool of people they already know. In my experience the interviews have been little more than a formality.
