Hi everyone, I am a US citizen completed USMLE and ECFMG certified but have not been able to secure residency training in USA. I am thinking of other options. I completed medical school from Poland. I am interested in starting training in Ireland. I don't have any previous internship training. What are the chances of getting internship in Ireland? Any advises would be helpful. Thank you so much.

Applications are closed for the coming year but the address to keep an eye on for next year is:

Generally be aware that it's getting increasingly harder for any non-EU applicants to get places in Ireland. EU students are prioritised and medical school graduates locally are outpacing intern posts so there is very little if anything left for anyone else.

Hi, Thank you all for the advice. How do we know how many spots are available each year and where? Since I studied in Poland does that count for anything?

There were 567 places nationally last year.

That you studied in Poland does not count for anything, it's a question of citizenship.

I know the internship for 2013 is over but when do they become available and how do we know which hospitals offers them? Is it on the HSE.IE website? Sorry for all of these questions, I don't want to jump into something if its not going to workout for me. Since you're from Europe do you have any suggestions for me?

Anyone have any suggestions for me since I need to do internship? From what I read it seems very difficult to get internship due the lack of spots and being a foreigner.

Tbh, if you're an US citizen, you'll have a better chance if you try the US. In there, you're second only to the US citizens who studied in their schools, over here you're at the end of the list, since EU citizens get first picks.

some of the mainland European medical degrees do not need a year of internship to obtain full registration. I think that is the case in Hungary. You might start by seeing if that is also the case in your university.

Not needing an intern year would open up a lot more places for you

SHO jobs are the next step on the ladder for you.

Jubin you will not get a job in ireland as an intern umless u have eu citizenship. There is already a shortage for eu citizens. 30 I think this yr.

If u plan on coming in as an sho by skipping a yr as the eastern european med schools attempt to do, then buy a yrs dose of prozac. Ive seen the results and its not pretty

Thanks, but SHO jobs requires 2-3 years of experience, isnt it?

    Thanks

I don't remember my school requiring us to complete internship after graduation. Can the eastern European schools get away with not doing internships?

The four main categories of applicant are:

Category 1: Graduates of Irish medical schools
Category 2: EU citizens who graduated in an EU medical school and/or their qualifications are recognised under EU Directives
Category 3: Non-EU citizens who graduated in an EU medical school and/or their qualifications would be recognised under EU Directives if they were EU citizens.
Category 4: Doctors who do not come under any of the above categories.

I fall into the third category. I found this from the Medical Council of Ireland wesite. This means my qualification would be recognised under EU directives?

No typically doctors start their SHO years after intern year.

Of course they would be, did you or did you not graduate in the EU?
I think everyone here helped you as far as they could, you should probably contact the HSE to find out if you're eligible to apply for SHO posts straight away (I second the prozac suggestion) or if you have to do an internship first, but neither will be easy, you'll always be second best to an EU citizen.

yes you do fall into category 3 but the problem is that there is not enough places available for the people in category 1! so the likely hood of gaining an intern place is very small

I think there's a shortage of SHOs in psychiatry, so finding a job shouldn't be too hard, provided you have the right qualifications. Getting on a training scheme is a different matter though.

I am doing my internship now. Is it enough to apply for SHO job in psychiatry?

Usually yes although some positions require prior experience.
Realistically though you should be making informed career decisions at this stage and asking this sort of question on an Internet forum does not bode well......

    Thanks for the information.
What is the website where I can check the posts avialable? Also, around which month of the year do we expect open places?
    Thank you

    Hi,
The OH is a Ukranian citizen and living here 3 years. Qualifications from Ukraine.

Qualified Psychiatrist with 10 years working experience. Also qualified 3 years in emergency medicine.
Her documents are currently with QQI for recognition.
What are the chances of her finding a job if all comes through ok?
