Fair play to the SA punters

4 furlong race in SA today. Odds on favourite rears in the gates then does a tumble and generally makes a nuisance of himself. He's only a 2 year old though...he should have been withdrawn and ran another day. Vet had a quick look at him and decided he was grand. All in the stalls...the favourites gate doesn't open when the others do...another horse's gate was even later to open...

So...in a 4 furlong race...as soon as that gate didn't open, the fav had no chance. The stewards looked at it and decided that because a false start wasn't called that the result stood. The punters weren't happy...they started a near riot and the jockeys were locked in their room...

Result - rest of the meeting abandoned for fear of the horse and jockey's safety.

Very embarrassing for South African racing.

Horses are always breaking through the stalls in SA.
