Golf 7 Highline or Jetta Highline for €1000 less?

I’m presently considering a new Golf 2.0 TDI DSG Highline for 2014. It has a list price of € 31,645
Looking at the Jetta in similar trim & engine plus DSG, it comes in at
€ 30,645, exactly a grand cheaper than the Golf

The current Jetta now has the following extra spec added:

    MIRROR PACKAGE -

Same as PLA but with electrically folding exterior mirrors.

rain sensor & auto-dimming interior mirror.

Park distance control - front and rear.
Auto dipping passenger side exterior mirror with memory function.

Maybe the Jetta lacks the appeal of the Golf, and maybe VW is thinking of phasing it out or whatever, but it also qualifies for the 3-yrs warranty + 3 yrs. free servicing, neither of which the Golf 7 qualifies for.

For € 1000 less than the Golf, doesn’t the Jetta seem to be a more attractive option? Can anyone see a down-side to choosing the Jetta, apart from it’s staid, dull styling?

I currently have an 2011 Jetta 1.6 TDI and apart from the lack-lustre engine and the manual box with it’s lack of torque which is a pain driving around towns a lot, I like the car. Just wondering about residuals etc.

Any words of wisdom and objectivity welcome, thanks :)

The interior of the jetta was a step down on the mark 6 let alone the mark 7. The highline mark 7 has the folding mirrors.

Personally I'd go with the Golf, it's not a huge amount extra given the overall cost and the Jetta is relatively unloved compared to the Golf in the used market.

    .

Thats because its just a big booted car for Mexicans and Chinese these days. Very expensive and bloody shoddy at that price. Should be wearing a Seat badge and retail at 21,995 max.

First off, do you need to buy the diesel over the tsi ?

You really got to take a long spin in the DSG, it can have a terrible lag, now it may be sorted from the last time I drove one, but coming up to a roundabout with your foot on the brake and hitting the throttle sometimes the car won't move and I nearly got smashed a few times until I got used to it.

Now I drove it in the 1.9 105 hp PD engine which hadn't a lot of power and auto's prefer higher power engines.

I also found the dsg hunting a lot for the right gear or kept changing up and down with the slightest tip of the throttle.

On the + side you can put it in manual if that bothers you.

The best automatic ever I tested was Audi's multitronic.

Having said that all auto's have some lag and it's a pain in the Prius, but that has a motor and engine to try and decide what wants to do what.

DSG boxes can be troublesome and VAG were forced to offer 10 year 100,000 mile warranty in the U.S and China.

Nail on the head there. It's a half arsed effort to fill a gap. But I'd prefer the exeo:)

Personally I think it is crazy spending the bones of €32k on a Golf or Jetta that isn't at least a GTi.

But if I was forced to choose between those two only I would probably go with the Golf if resale is important and it is a more modern design. The Jetta still uses the MkVI Golf chassis which was really a MkV that was designed almost 10 years ago at this stage.

Strongly advise u not to buy the jetta i had a 2012 highline 1.6 very bad road noise and felt i was driving a tin can this jetta is not made in germany. I traded it in for a mk7 golf 2.0tdi it took some time to get used to driving on rough roads but find it ok now i went for 17" wheels if i was doing it again i would stick to the 16s so golf it will be worth more when you want to trade it in

I think you need your head examined spending that kind of money on a Golf.

What's wrong with you? Buy this and use the change to buy yourself some imagination. And a pair of balls. (Ignore if a femme, you shouldn't have 32 grand).

Agreed on this. Although I liked the 'weighty' feel of the MKV Golf I bought new in 2007 there's a massive difference in performance, economy and spec between the VI and VII.

OT but SEAT stopped making the exeo earlier this year.
As above though, I know its your money to spend but there are so many better cars out here.

Hang on, this thread is 6 months old....
