A newly planted hedge I planted last year and the grass grew a good bit around them, is it safe to use roundup in a knapsack sprayer? There are no leaves or buds on the hedge yet so technically speaking it couldnt take in roundup?? Could it soak through the bark? If left alone will the hedge overpower the grass? Help/advice appreciated, John.

I've always sprayed around new hedging for the first few years with Gallup or Touchdown in a knapsack , which do the same job as Roundup only they're a lot cheaper, without any problems. Hedging will definitely establish quicker if kept weed free for the first few years until the hedge's natural cover suppresses weeds/grass.

Use a hood on sprayer and take your time.
I've always used Roundup around new hedging, pre-budding.
If you hit any part of a plant, break it off.
It must be a still day, no wind. Drift will kill them as they can take it in through bark.
