    Hi,

Thinking of doing a charity cycle from Limerick to Carlow(Limerick-Birdhill-Ballinaclough-Toomevara-Moneygall-roscrea-Borris_In-_Ossory-Abbeyleix-Killeshin-Carlow)

I have very little experience cycling so I am looking for information regarding the route, has it been done before by anyone?

    Thnak you.

Your route from Limerick to Boris on Ossory is the old main road to Dublin. It should be quieter now. I've done the stretch to Nenagh regularly and its fairly flat. I suspect the entire section to Borris is flatish and if you do it on a day with the old gulf steam on your tail you'll fly along.

Dont know the section over to Carlow too well but I recollect a few long drags.

Thank you very much for the info Boege!... I am a first timer attempting a 180klm cycle for charity, can I ask do you think it could be done in 1 day? (after 8 weeks training!)

Not the way I would go.

How about Cappamore, Doon, Cashel, Killeanuale, Bennetsbridge, Gowran Carlow?
180km is doable, be up befire its bright eat well. Nice steady pace. Short regular breaks. Normal food. Enjoy.
Did the Cashel Cappamore section in above route on a 200km or so solo ride from west waterford to Galway last year.
    Enjoy

Limerick to Borris-in-Ossary is a very pleasant cycle, almost totally flat, a wide cycle lane as far as Nenagh and a wide hard shoulder to Borris. (Not sure how Ballinaclugh sneaked into your route as it is toally off course). Best of luck with the venture

It's not the old Dublin road as OP is turning off after Birdhill to take a secondary road to Toom.

The route is mostly correct and I know it back to front as I was driving it twice weekly for years. Birdhill-Nenagh-Toom-Roscrea. Then you decide if you're going through Abbeyleix or Portlaoise. If the former, you turn off main road after Borris if not you continue to Mountrath, Port, Stradbally Carlow. I would probably go through Abbey but if you've a helluva tailwind the main road may be easier. I've often considered this cycle but always decided it would be very boring, maybe not if you've a good group going.
Good luck with it anyway, it should be enjoyed.

You'd want a couple of 100km spins done first and a 150km in my opinion. If you manage those then give yourself time and food etc and you should do it.
Deffo do a couple of long days in the saddle - 7hrs+
