Windows 7 detecting monitor that's not there?

My AIO seems to be detecting a monitor (through VGA apparently) that's not connected. Yesterday I was trying to use HDMI to display my PC on my TV, but that didn't work because I only have HDMI In:pac:.

Since then, every time I log into my PC all of my icons are not on my screen, they're on this mystery screen, so I have to go to resolution settings every time and set it display on my PC monitor only.

Any ideas why it's doing what it's doing and fixes? Thanks!

    Try using Win + P

where win is the key with the windows logo down near the spacebar

it doesn't solve the problem but makes it easier to live with

like when the gamma on Intel HD graphics sometimes goes wonkey after standby and the screen gets washed out
    - life's too short to keep looking for a permanent fix when the temporary one is a hotkey away
