Bottom bracket shell tapping?

    Hello lads,

I've got a frame with whitworth threading here, which is no use to me as I can't get a decent chain line no mater what I do. So does anyone know where I could get the shell tapped for an ISO bb? In/near Dublin would also be a big plus.

    Cheers, Cian.

You could try Loftus Farrell in Harold's Cross - they're more automotive but would be likely to gave the setup to do it. It might be tricky as tapping might well increase the overall diameter of the opening. Have you tried Hilary Stone in the UK for parts?

you could try one of those rescue bottom brackets, see this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=71748865

Combining both of these posts I found one of those threadless BBs on that Hilary Stone website and hopefully will order ASAP. I'll update the thread with my experience if anyone else ever needs the info.

    Thanks for the replies.

If you're ordering the YST unit, I'd advise getting two so that you have a spare on standby. I used them for a few years and while I have no complaints about them, considering the low cost, it's worth noting that the bearings are pants. I found that they lasted about a year of regular commuting, whereas I was accustomed to getting much longer than that out of Shimano square taper BB's.

The bearings are cartridge type, retained with circlips and would be easy to replace. Though they'd hardly be much cheaper than the complete BB unit.

Also, when installing, they need to go in good and tight, otherwise they loosen. For this, I needed to buy a second BB extractor, since if you tighten on one side only, the other side tends to turn in the frame. You could possibly use some light grade thread lock as an alternative to using high torque.

If the BB has 26tpi threads then it can only be a Raleigh or a bike made by them with another name, the problem is most of the BB shells with 26tpi threads were usually between 70-76mm wide and the thread-less BBs mentioned above are only suitable for 68mm shells so they may not work.

Re-tapping is a possibility but the threads left are very fragile, or if the shell width is or is around the 70mm size the it could be reamed and tapped to Italian threads or a special press fit BB could also be fitted.

There are lots of options to make the whole thing work, it's just deciding on the best option for your particular situation and of course there are still some NOS 26tpi BB parts out there if you look hard enough!

Thanks for the info, would never of known, it will probably be a job for the LBS I don't think I could handle any more BB woes without breaking something :o
