On March 10, Sony Pictures announced two new movies: a sequel to the upcoming reboot “Evil Dead” and another sequel relating to the original trilogy, unofficially known as “Evil Dead 4.” Sam Raimi will be involved in both films, producing the former and directing and co-writing the latter.

Coming Soon caught up with producer Rob Tapert at SXSW this past weekend, where he announced that “Evil Dead 4” would instead be “Army of Darkness 2.”

Stupidly excited at the prospect of this.

Monday's just gone from Zero to Hero to Ash!

Serious double take when I heard of this announcement. I thought Army of Darkness closed on a pretty solid note, whichever ending you treat as canon, so it'll be interesting to see exactly how they make a new installment seem like a natural move. That's if the project ever comes to fruition, which is by no means a guarantee.

Mixture of grand excitement, and fear of them ruining it.

As long as the make Ash something of a coward ill be more than happy. For me, Army of Darkness gets a lot less interesting during the scene where Ash disappears mid battle only to reemerge upon his chariot ready to kick ass. I'd have much preferred if he was missing for a bit and when they went to see where he was, they found him cowering under a table or hiding in a press.

Hmmm, he'll want to hit the gym if he's doing it, Campbell has got a little pudgy in his dotage going by his appearances on Burn Notice :)

It feels like good news on the surface, but aren't we all a little burned out and tired by now of fabled franchises & characters from our youth and/or the 80s being resurrected as gutless cash-ins to prey on our nostalgia? Just feels like another cynical "hey, that was popular wasn't it? Let's do another", hard to get too excited :-/

Ah yeah but this feels a bit different for me, evil dead 4 is something which has been hinted at and anticipated long before Hollywood went sequel mad. One of the first things I ever searched on the Internet the first time I got access to it way back when was "when is evil dead 4 coming out" :D

I hope they stick with the stop-motion animation they had used last time! Screw modern CGI!

Not surprised by this at all.

The remake was very well received by critics and public alike so the franchise is very much back in the public conciousness, Raimi has been off the radar for quite some time so let's lash out a garaunteed money maker, whoopee.

Hardly guaranteed. Army of Darkness was a box office flop. It only became a hit on video.

I went to see it with the S-Mart ending

Never expected to see this happen.

Still have to see The Evil Dead reboot.

Isn't this 'confirmation' by Campbell pretty much his default answer to the question of an AoD sequel over the years? It's a stock answer he's been giving for years at conventions that doesn't actually confirm that a sequel is in the works. When Raimi himself announces it then I'll get excited.

    Utterly unenthusiastic about this.

Would prefer to see two sequels to the reboot including a rebooted version of AoD.
Resurrecting the original series stinks of Raimi and Campbell gratifying themselves more than anyone else.
