    Hi,

Do I need anything with Microsoft Security Essentials for security for the PC?

Do I need any anti-spyware/malware software also? Or does MS Security Ess cover the whole lot?

    Thanks.

It also scans for spyware/malware etc. I see it hasn't rated very well recently in tests, but I have never had a problem with it.

What would you suggest instead of it? Free or paid

Nothing. MSE is small and very unobtrusive. They update it's database regularly and it works very well for the home user.

Avast Free is highly rated, I'm giving it a go on my work machine and it's not offending me

Totally agree. It's been the best I've used because you don't even know it's there until there's a problem.

In terms of ratings against other products, the last review I read (a few years ago) had it in 3rd place mainly because of speed of scans.

It falls down because it looks for a defined virus instead of being able to detect what an actual virus looks like. This is important for corporate type use where people would specifically make viruses to target you, but as a home user, you'll only be encountering your everyday virus.

Do you use it? What kind of reviews does it get.

I also run Super Antispyware from time to time, it has picked up spyware which MSE didn't.

I seriously don't recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.. I've had a virus on my computer [I put one on my computer for testing reasons] and it didn't detect it at all. I think your most better off paying for a decent one that will actually do the trick.

What did pick it up that youd recommend paying for? And what virus?
MSE has never failed me in the time ive been using it. Still run Malwarebytes when im suspicious though

Avast and Malwarebytes for me. Avast can be a bit too chatty with default settings but thankfully it can all be turned off.
