Corsa fuel gauge problem.

Hi all, first time posting here so be gentle :)

I've got a 01 Opel Corsa that the fuel pump went on a while back. Got it replaced but then the fuel gauge started giving me problems. Basically it was reading wrong if there was more than a quarter of a tank of petrol. It was up and down and all over the place but when there was less than a quarter of a tank it seemed fine. It was like this for months and never really bothered me but recently it went into the red, then started flashing and then stopped and read as if it was empty.
I removed the back seat and had a look at the pump. The little ball cock thing wasn't connected to the pump. The guy that replaced the pump must've forgot to put it back.
Anyway I put it back where it should be and it reads fine until a couple of hours later when I get back in the car it's reading empty again.
I've taken it out and put it back a couple of times and the same thing happens.

Does anybody know what's going on cos it's starting to drive me mental now.

Sorry for the long winded post.
