    http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/more-speed-cameras-for-blackspots-587976.html

    http://www.garda.ie/gosafe.htm

Speed cameras are to target hundreds more accident blackspots as part of a country-wide road safety overhaul.

Almost half of all road deaths happen at just over 700 sections of the road - most of them local and regional – which have been identified by traffic gardai.

Until now, a network of “GoSafe” speed cameras were trained on 518 danger zones but a review of the scheme will see a further 243 blackspots covered.

Garda Assistant Commissioner Gerard Phillips said: “We want people to become familiar with them, realise why they are there and to slow down.”

Nearly half of all fatal collisions between 2006 and last year occurred on the earmarked 727 sections of road – which make up just 2.5% of the entire road network.

The garda website, at www.garda.ie/gosafe.htm, includes a map showing the location of the surveillance zones.

As part of a road safety review, 34 sections of road which were previously covered by the mobile cameras have now been removed.

Asst Comm Phillips said the launch of the speed cameras in 2010 resulted in a reduction from 30% of all fatal collisions at the original identified blackspots down to 17%.

“This effectively means in 2012 alone we have prevented 20 lives being lost,” he said.

“We must thank the public for this and acknowledge this positive change in driver behaviour.” But he added: “In saying that, as we head into St Patrick’s weekend, there have been 43 people killed so far in 2013, 15 road deaths more than this date last year.

“Of those, 27 have been drivers and three have been passengers alone.
“There is no doubt that speed still remains the main contributory factor in road traffic collisions. We can never be complacent about road safety and think the job is finished. That is why we are releasing these new GoSafe safety camera locations.”

And at least half of them are on roads nobody ever uses any more, eg nenagh to roscrea, and nenagh to limerick, well done Rsa.

I also see they have extended the one into portumna (i live very close)
There has never been a death or a serious accident on that piece of road in living memory........knobs.

There's a stretch of road I use every day. It's been recently zoned. The only reason I see it was zoned is to force people to use the motorway.

    Here to here

It's a grand big road, used to be a national route
No fatalities have occurred within the aforementioned zone
Further down the road where lots of fatalities have occurred the van sits just the far side of a crest in a gateway where cars can't see. No accidents or fatalities around there either, they're down the road where they're never at... Said blackspot

It's the same with the local R road, sits just inside the 60kmh zone at the bottom of a hill to catch people that haven't slowed down in time. Gobsh*te

I'll conclude with a picture I dish out now and again

Whats the story re challenging a go safe fine in court. Are go safe bound to send in camera van operator to give evidence? Do we have a situation where the government are paying the go safe company more to appear in court than the fine collected. Or is the court appearance part of their normal fees?

I'd assume the action is taken by the Gardai rather than Go Safe?

Since when is Rathcormack to Watergrasshill on the R639 a "black spot".

What utter nonsense. I have no doubt this was picked in order to get more people onto the M8 which of course you have to pay €1.80 for the privelege of.

I have no doubt over time that these zones will increase and increase until the entire country will be covered in these vans with the operator creaming off some severe profits.

When old fellas and old ones start ending up with 4 or 6 penalty points we'll action on these.

Also anyone ever have a van park on their property ? I spotted a van a few weeks ago parked blocking a farmers field entrance.

Provided you are the owner you can ask them to move.
