I'm pretty new to Dublin living in phibsborough and I'm interested in staring something new. I did some judo with school ages ago but I'm not particularly looking for that. Bjj caught my eye as did Muay Thai and I'd consider judo also as I liked the bit I did. I'm not looking to compete or anything just looking to have fun and meet some people outside of work.

I saw these guys on a sign near work www.kyuzogym.com and my workmate said that there's a Thai boxing club nearby too. I've googled but can't find anything on them.

I have access to a car (not my own though!!!!) so I could drive for the right place, but local is better I guess.

So if anyone knows a good place please recommend!

Kyuzo are a great bunch anyway, you couldn't go wrong trying out BJJ there and seeing if you like it.

As the other rain lover ( :D ) mentioned, Kyuzo is very close to where you are.
It's a very "beginner friendly" place as well and they regularly run beginners classes in BJJ and MMA...

There's also Bridgestone Muay Thai up in Stoneybatter and Lionheart in Summerhill which I think does Muay Thai and BJJ as well.

Not sure if it's still there, but Niall Keane used to run Sanda/Sanshou classes up in Drumcondra as well.

You've got lots of options! :)

Both Kyuzo and Bridgestone are excellent gyms. Try both if you can

Kyuzo are definitely worth a visit

There was a thread last week looking for clubs in Glasnevin that might also suit you given your location

You might get some ideas from there. If you have a bit of time I'd suggest have a look at a few places and see what suits you best

kyuzo just started a beginners course again on their facebook page. might be some spots available still https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kyuzo-MMA/100188456739523
but most clubs are usually pretty friendly if youre a beginner, youll be grand with any of the mentioned ones

Pretty sure Niall is working in Blanchardstown now.
I'd recommend him anyway, love the way he teaches.

Call me stupid but I can't find any info on the kyuzo website about beginner courses and I don't have Facebook account ( still holding out!) Do you just walk into martial arts clubs or do you have to be vetted book a session or something? Who is the instructor there?

I know these are probably real noob questions! Sorry!!!!

    Hi Lececherer,

The coach is Barry Ogelsby. He's a brown belt in BJJ and the classes are excellent. There are also MMA, wrestling and conditioning classes. I would highly recommend going up and speaking to him.

If you need directions or any othe rinformation, let me know

Great thanks everyone. I don't have much interest in mma do you know if you can just do Bjj without it?

I mailed the kyuzo guys and got a reply yesterday so thinking about going down on Monday night if I don't have a hangover from today!

Any advice from you guys for someone who is a bit out of shape but really wants to start?!!!! Getting a bit nervous about starting now!

Don't worry about fitness, you'll be in shape soon enough. :p

    Yes, BJJ is not MMA.

Kyuzo is a great place to look & train.

Yes. You do not need to be fit to start and you will get fitter as you go. But I would recommend being thoroughly warmed up.

The coach will do a warm up with you before the class. But I would advise take 30 minutes before the class to do an extra warm up. Try to do dynamic stretches of as many muscles as possible. Concentrate on warming the neck shoulders and hips especially . As if you are unused to exercise then these will be particularly weak. Then try to stay loose as you make your way to the gym.
Speaking from experience I am off 'injured' due to straining a muscle during a warm up. So I fully advise learning how to get limbered up even before you set foot in the gym.
For example. For a seven pm class I will start getting the blood moving from six ish by doing windmills with my arms. Rotating my neck and shoulders and do some leg raises. Then around 630 I would do a ten to fifteen minute full body dynamic stretch routine before cycling to the gym. At the gym i will try to keep the blood flowing with knee raises and body squats and some static stretches. Then do the regular warm up with the class. During the class I will try to do static stretches of anything that gets sore. After class there should be a cool down. Before slowly cycling back home.
It might sound like overkill but if you are out if practice then keeping those neglected muscles loose will save you pain later. I've missed too many classes because of pulled and knotted shoulder and back muscles and each time I knew if I'd done an extra warm up I wouldn't be in such pain.
