I'm longer a practicing catholic eventhough I was born Roman Catholic so I'm not the biggest fan of the church. To suggest this is outrageous and frankly irresponsible and corruptible to our children's minds and hearts.Okay if you want to bash the church and give out about its shortcomings, failings and need for change but to my mind such perverse opinions are more of a threat to humanitys way of life than any teaching any priest good or bad ever preached from the pulpit hypocrite or otherwise. What next from Colm?does he think newborn kids should be given a condom pack home with them with their mothers from the maternity ward?Far more dangerous and appalling in my opinion than any radical or liberal idea I have heard.Enough is enough RTE give us leadership with some morals and ethics or none at all.I for one will be boycotting his show from now on and have lost all respect for him.Opinions please??

Didn't know the chap was still around but what a brilliant idea. The RCC stance on condoms hasn't helped the African continent, has it?

Many years back, I remember when a condom dispenser was put in the campus in UCD and promptly removed. I'd like to think people have moved on since then.

People should be more open about sex. Education, not repression.

Church aside does he think they should be handed out at primary schools aswell??I can't believe how somebody in a position of power and influence could be so irresponsible and shameful...and whatya know...his music choice in between his discussion of the newly elected pope...yes you've guessed it - Rihanna. The worst example of a cheap thrashy sexfuelled rolemodel for young girls.Unbelievable...please get this ignoramus off the air.

The worst example, since the last role model?

Isn't it sad how independent women have been demonised over the years for being upfront and not ashamed to be sexual?

    Good on Hayes :D

id say the biggest problem Africa has is third world debt and abject poverty ,hunger and drought rather than a free condom tradefair that it lacks to be fair.If you think that the one thing the African people are crying out for is condoms than your ignorance is bliss and simplified beyond belief.

I thought you were talking about the irresponsibilty of condoms being handed out? I pointed out the irresponsiblity of not promoting them in Africa. I should be more specific, it's not fair to put the whole continent under one umbrella. Each and every country there is very different.

Now, enlighten me. What is your problem with women who are upfront about their sexuality?

What would be wrong with educating children about sex?

So let me get this straight...you think condoms should be promoted in places where there are children as young as 8,9,10 years of age??there is nothing wrong a woman being open with her sexuality but young girls should be allowed to enjoy their childhood free from pressures and expectations of a sexual nature. You are aware that the legal age for sex in this country is 17 and its put there for good reason for the protection of children. Its one thing to put condom machines in colleges where young men and women are coming of age and experimenting sexually and learning to love and respect their bodies but to suggest we give condoms to children and put them up in their face in primary schools and churches is quite another and frankly totally irresponsible. Hell even secondary schools is too young and puts older children girls and boys aged 16 & 17 at risk of unwittingly becoming and being labelled pedophiles. What age are you suggesting children should be made aware and handed condoms at??

so Rihanna is so independent that she can't keep away from the one person who choose to disrespect her physically and emotionally in Chris Brown.Do you think Rihannas "independence" has brought her respect from men and women in general?

A fool is one thing but a dangerous foul spouting off extremist ideas and trying to "normalize" the public sphere of young people that listen in to his show is shocking I find.Do these overpaid buffoons feel they have no responsibility? Why would somebody have such a harmful agenda?

Is that the same fella that had a show one time; the Colm and Jim Jim show or something? If it’s the same man, lord above but he is one insufferable arsehole.

It's another show in 2FM that is seriously struggling for good ideas.
Nothing would surprise me from him, but I do't listen to his show.
Incredibly well paid (over 200k I believe) for what he does and delivers
in respect of his JNLR figures. Would love to know how many staff there are putting his show together
    compared to Moncrief for example??

yup that's him alright !!I had thought he was at least bearable at times even for him this is a new low for the constant attack on the Irish family as a unit and the oversexualization of children.God be with the days when Gerry Ryan who many would have many different things to say but least he wouldn't feel it necessary to promote the handing out of condoms to infants. He exclaimed that it would be his number one request off the new pope. Not a restructuring of papal policies that might aid family values or a more liberal attitude to the idea of priests marrying or inclusion of womens rights. No he thinks the church leaders should give condoms to kids in their lunchbox or pencil case.If he feels so strongly about that why doesn't he set up a petition to lobby government re The introduction into non denominational schools first and see how far it gets him.Only a mind that's sick and perverted could come up with something as ludicrous as what he suggested there today.Fool would be a complement to this degenerate.Sick and disgusting.I really think that if a politician had come up with something like this they would be demanding his removal from office. Why then oh why is the likes of him not called onto get off the air or are we Irish lost all sense of indignation or right to defend ourselves and our children from such vile assertions??

200,000 and this is how he repays Irish taxpayer by putting more pressure on kids to be sexually aware and causing more headaches for parents who have enough to be worried about feeding and educating their children in a recession without now facing the prospect of young kids at school or in mass having to ask whats a condom machine mother because Colm thinks there should be one beside the holy water font or next to the classroom.I feel for parents listening in today after they had dropped their kids off to school.

Publicity Stunt for who and for what benefit.Im not angry I'm indignant there's a differance.Relaxing on something which goes right to the heart of sexual crimes and underage pregnancy is hardly something to be ignored or maybe you could enlighten me as to why you think these views are not extremely damaging to the wellbeing of children and the fourth estates duty of care to society at whole??
That's the problem which Irish people these days ...too relaxed to notice how any remaining values, standards and morals are being eroded on a daily basis. You can adopt your laissez faire attitude with your own kids if you like but I dont want mine being exposed to such thanks and regards. This isn't even about the church I dont go to mass and am fairly disillusioned with various aspects of the hierarchical structure and scandals that have gone on but his type of attitude nearly goes so far as to applaud and reinforce the sexual crimes that have plagued the church in recent years.Does Colm think altar boys and girls should be given condoms for a job well done after a service because that seems to be what he's implying???

I think you're mixing up a lot of different topics. Perhaps you should have called the thread "The Decline of Irish Society as I See it" :D

Sex education is a good thing. It might lead to less heartache and general ignorance in future.

    And less hysterical posts, too.

I could be wrong but it seems like you think young people having condoms leads to underage pregnancy? I would have thought them not having condoms would be the main cause?
I don't condone underage sex but if someone wants a condom then I think they should be given one regardless of age because chances are they might still have sex even if they can't get one. Just my opinion but I think much more should done to educate younger people about sex and the dangers of unprotected sex rather than just hiding from the problem!

I think its you that's mixing up topics.Sex education is a good think for those that require it ie.those permitted under law .17 is the legal age just to remind you.Handing out condoms to children under 16 educates them how exactly??It encourages them and heightens insecurities in them around sex effectively pressuring kids and their peers to grow up faster than they should have to.If you are including children underage in your "free condoms for everyone" than I think your a very misguided and irresponsible individual. So you are condoning condom machines being put into place in primary schools?

I only see one person spouting extremist ideas.

There is nothing immoral about sex and abstinence never proved a very successful contraceptive in this country.

Teenagers really don't care what the legal age to have sex is, they'll have sex because they want to have sex and it'll happen from ages 12-16 too. There's no sense in pretending it doesn't happen and act all offended at the thought of it, that doesn't prevent teenage pregnancies.

Nobodys pretending it doesn't happen but "promoting it" and actively encouraging them to engage in it is another.
Condom Machines will only serve to increase young people engaging in sexual acts and being expected to.And you think this is a good thing?
sure if somebody wants one its not hard to get but condom machines in primary schools...
You would encourage that? A simple yes or no will suffice.

I learnt about the facts of life when I was 9. I know people - from the continent - who were taught earlier than that. None of us had an urge to dabble or reproduce. But when I was older, I would of been glad to have condoms at hand. Because teens will have sex, be there available contraception or not.

I have to say, that argument that condom machines will encourage young people to have sex is like something you'd hear in the 70s or 80s. Bizarre.

Not even worth a reply. You should set up a dating agency for kids and make money off your sick views. And then we wonder why some young people suffer abuse.Bizarre.

Sex education is a form of abuse now, is it?

Frankly, I find your hysteria troubling. A sign of the bad old days of repression.

What is so terrifying about a 9 year old learning about the facts of life?
