When I was on my way out to Howth about 20 mins ago I noticed two planes on approach turn away when they got to Portmarnock. There was also a Garda helicopter hovering in the Clarehall area. However an Emirates 777 just passed me now and seemed to continue it's approach.

Aircraft seem to be landing at the moment.

Looking at the DAA website everything seems to be delayed.

Wouldn't b suprised judging by where the helicopter was, a bunch of filth shining a laser at approaching aircraft.

It's a laser. Daylight or no daylight it will do damage to pilot's eyes and/or aircraft's external sensors

Be harder to use I'd imagine, but these wasters have plenty of practice. Still do damage if they get it in the right spot. Another reason to move them away from civilisation.

    Dublin Airport ‏@DublinAirport

Three flights diverted earlier as Garda helicopter, which was dealing with serious incident, had priority from air traffic control.

Is what the official line is.

Curious , what external sensors would be sensitive to a lazer beam?

Dublin Airport did not close this morning.

Arriving aircraft were delayed because the Garda Helicopter (Echo 272) was operating in the vicinity of the approach to runway 28 and was granted priority over inbound traffic by ATC.

Aircraft on approach were put into holding patterns and three of them diverted to Shannon (because they were running low on fuel).

Departing traffic continued to operate as normal.

In this case do the aircraft fly back to Dublin from Shannon after refueling?

I can concur on the rest of your post. Got a lovely pic of a Ryanair passing 1000 ft overhead as we were routing to SORIN.

So do you know the answer to your question? Or were you looking to stir something up?

I was told that it can mess with the radio altimeters on some aircraft.

I presume also IR camera on Irish Coast Guard and Garda Air Support Unit helis.

Never heard of the Rad Alt issue, interesting.

A spokesperson from the Dublin Airport Authority told TheJournal.ie that an Aer Lingus flight from Gatwick, an Aer Lingus Flight from Brussels and a Ryanair flight from Las Palmas were all diverted to Shannon at around 11am.

    Bet you guessed wrong.

Why didn't the aircraft in question just use 16?

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 6,524 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Steve

Hey, it took 45 minutes to get 16 open the other day when the Metro blocked 28. They were probably still working out who to send to inspect 16 when the helicopter cleared the area.

Switching from 28 to 16 from the aircraft perspective is probably the bigger hassle, if they were closer in than 10 miles, it's a missed approach scenario, with a low level view of North Leinster for the passengers, out to at least Duleek via Dunshaughlin and almost Navan.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Very Unlikely, the chances of aiming perfectly at the 4 RAD ALT antennae on a moving jet is probably impossible especially with gears down and also engines in the way

I think the pilots eyes is the instrument it interferes with.

Ah thanks for clearing that up for me :)

the go-around for RWY16 would take the aircraft directly towards the helicopter hovering so that was not an option
