So like the title says; some kids threw some rocks into my apartment car park last night and one of them hit my bonnet. I called the police around and all that but I want to see what you guys think about an approach to attempting a repair.

On the underside of the dent/scratch is a structural doubler so I cannot tap the dent out softly with a hammer/mallet.

What I do have is a scratch repair kit from halfords (primer / paint / laquer). Do you think I should use that or you reckon this requires a professional job?

I'm guessing the professional job is going to be very expensive... :(

I hate knackers so so so so so much.

wouldnt you go to Police, and report for such behavior, might they will find them, and parents will be charged for your car repairs.

I did call the police and they came by in a patrol car. I gave them a description but the only description I could give though was "4 guys, in hoodies, mid teens" - that's all I saw of them. needle in a haystack stack of needles. I have a reference number and all that should I decide to go down the insurance route but it really doesn't seem worth it.

They stayed around the area for a while and did patrols around the area for the next hour or so aswell as a deterent and to scare the scumbags off home but there's nothing the police can really do.

to fix that, goin to be expensive, go in to some car paint garages, ask for quote , youl see, it wont be cheap to get it right as it was. you have vw golf mark 4 ? just other option, if youll find in scrapyard exactly same color body parts, and replace, that would be cheaper. those litle dents are nasty to repair, as if paint, the whole panel has to be painted, if paint just damaged surface, iti will be visible as different shade.

To fix it right tour talking a new bonnet
Any repair to that would show up on the underside of the bonnet .
You might get lucky with a secondhand bonnet the right color but doubtful

    golf mk5

I imagine getting a new bonnet isn't going to be cheap either...

I'm going to have a go at fixing it up myself with a chip repair pen. I may aswell. See how it turns out and if i'm still not happy i'll have a look at the more costly alternatives.

Just on the drivers side aswell. Exactly where I have to look at it every day.

Well, new bonnet goin to be expensive, i was thinking about second hand, from somebody who is selling for parts, or get from scrapyard. , make sure there is same paint code. i think source second hand will be cheaper, than repair and repaint.

I should have clarified but yeah that's what I meant; a second hand bonet with the same paint code.

And for feck sake, to add insult to injury; I'm currently working on dent allowable analysis for aircraft skins.

Definitely new bonnet. Try the usual Traynors Donedeal etc.

I think the likes of trimtech charge around €250 for repairs , per panel.

I have a few dents and scratches on my A3 since I bought it that are annoying me , but, wouldnt you know it, they are all on different panels. Im dreading getting a quote. :(

Its unfortunate that its on a double skined / structral part of the bonnet, as a paintless dent removal and touch up paint would definitely take the harsh look off it. I'd be looking into changing the panel also! It will never be right with a smart repair, touch up pen or whatever other method may be available. Of course, Im speaking if the budget isnt an issue.

Filler and paint it for the time being.

yeah you're absolutly right, if I could just tap it out a little bit and touch it up to get the harsh look off of it I might be happy enough. I'll have a better look this evening to see if there's anyway I can tap it out.

I love looking after the car you know, dents like this really piss me off so bonet transplant might very well be the case. I'm not going to do it right away though, I'm gonna leave it a while and live with it until I look at moving appartment. There has been a few cases of little assholes throwing rocks at cars in our carpark and 2 or 3 windows smashed aswell.

next place I live will have underground and completley secured parking.

Another option would be to just fill the dent with filler and see would the wrap guys cover it with a plastic coating close to your original color .

Tapping out a dent like that on such a large panel would involve shrinking the metal .

As you say, wait until you move, and try live with the nasty look until then! Do yourself the favour of not wasting too much time and money on fixing a dent or painting etc.....if you love looking after your car, you know it will never be right, and you'll end up chaging the bonnet anyways! ;)

OP, you might want to invest in one of these until you move!:D

    ^^^^^ :D

    At the end..."Not a scratch"

    Ehhhh....its full of swirls :D ....not a dent, I accept! :D:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭randy hickey

Unless it had a microfibre lining....

....rushes off to the patent office.....:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

It was swirlled in the before pictures!! :D

But it should have a microfire lining, so if it hasnt....go quick, before I do! :D

You just know that somewhere in the instruction manual is the disclaimer; This product is not to be used while driving!

I was wondering if anyone has any "out of the box" ideas to cover up the dent.

A boy racer air intake, stiker, vinyl, speed holes, etc...

I'll consider even the stupidly gaudy boy racer options. I'd rather look at a piece of tat than a dent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

    Please dont! :o

If you are really thinking that route...go with the filler and wrap the bonnet!! Dont go down the boy racer route!

when you say "filler and wrap the bonnet"... what exactly do you mean?

as in an epoxy filler to cover and smooth out the dent, and then a black vinyl wrap over the whole bonnet?

trust me... I dont want to go down the boy racer route at all. But if i'm looking to get a replacment bonnet from a breakers anyway... whats the harm in trying to fix this one. (cheaply)

Click here - fill out the form.....Id do it for you if I had your details :D:p

    They're very good! ;)

A cheap fix is often as bad looking as a bad dent!
The filler and wrap route is going to be fairly pricey...source a bonnet, cant be that hard for a mkV Golf, and get it sprayed for the few extra quid.
There are plenty of breakers about....give them a call. Chances are you'll find a bonnet the same colour and will save you getting it sprayed, even if it isnt quite the exact match!

Already did that ;) they're not too far away from me either which is nice. just waiting for a reply, but i'm gonna go for a spin up there on the weekend anyway to see what they have.

I wouldn’t go near fillers if I was you, car looks fairly new, I reckon your best betis to try some of the breakers and see what they say, best of luck.

I wouldn't bother repairing it until you've moved address or at least the car park is better secured.

My car was keyed a while back, its been quite badly damaged. At one point I thought about offering a bounty for info on who did it, I reckoned somebody would know and grass them up, but the risk was too great since I had no safe place for the car. It amazes me that a relatively small part of the population is allowed to ruin things for the majority. It ruins communities, people no longer trust locals and instead now everyone is a stranger. "Small" things like this are corroding our society.
