How much money can I bring from Ireland to India?

    I'm thinking of planning a trip to India for cosmetic surgery and I'm told I can pay for it in cash. I'd need around US$13,000 - 15,000 (the doctor accepts dollars).

    Anyone have any idea if I can bring that sort of money out of the E.U. and through Indian customs?

    I thought ten grand was the max you could take out of the country without declaring.

    I'd be pretty concerned about carrying that sort of wedge around, even if it does turn out to be legal.

    According to the www.cbec.gov.in website, 'Any person can bring into India from a place outside India foreign exchange without any limit. However, declaration of foreign exchange/currency is required to be made in the prescribed Currency Declaration Form in the following cases:-
    (a) Where the value of foreign currency notes exceeds US$ 5000/- or equivalent
    (b) Where the aggregate value of foreign exchange (in the form of currency notes, bank notes, traveler cheques etc.) exceeds US$ 10,000/- or its equivalent'

    However, it states that only 'Tourists' may take foreign currency out of India.
    '6. Tourists while leaving India are allowed to take with them foreign currency not exceeding an amount brought in by them at the time of their arrival in India. As no declaration is required to be made for bringing in foreign exchange / currency not exceeding equivalent of U.S. $ 10000, generally tourists can take out of India with them at the time of their departure foreign exchange/currency not exceeding the above amount.'

    According to the site 'A tourist is a passenger
    a) who is not normally a resident in India;
    b) who enters India for a stay of not more than six months in the course of any twelve months period for legitimate non-immigrant purposes, such as : touring, recreation, sports, health, family reasons, study, religious pilgrimage, or business'

    Just another note of caution. People in India will accept foreign currency.(this is an obsession). It might be better to pay in local currency through banks so that everything is legal.
    However paying in cash is not a good idea. I would suggest travellers cheques or some other form of payment that can be tracked/recorded in case you have any issues later on. Also, hope you have done background research on the facility. There are good clinics in India that can give to state of the art treatment, but there are always chancers as well......
