Asia-question re: Japan and Thailand

Hi all, just a quick couple of questions. Thinking of travelling on a budget for a couple of months around Asia.
What are peoples opinions about Thailand as a destination? Does it tend to attract a rougher crowd or is that a (I hope!) ignorant observation on my part. What are the best places to visit?
Also, anyone travelled to Japan? Is it worth travelling there when on a tight budget? Is it doable? Any big highlights for people?
Any other amazing Asian countries people could recommend for two women in their mid-twenties? Leave out China and Tibet as have done a lot of travel in those countries already.
    Any help would be appreciated!

We loved Thailand. It's a popular country and so attracts a whole range of tourists. If you're staying in backpacker districts then it's a bit more studenty, some do not like that.
However, there are a whole lot of hotels/hostels spread around the city, and most taxi drivers/tuk tuk drivers have basic english so it's easy to get around anyway.
