What's the plan? Mine is up in 2 days. Its my understanding that if you apply for an extension of your temporary resident status you'll receive implied status enabling you to stay and work.

You can't extend IEC visas. AFAIK best you can do is try your arm at that and buy yourself an extra week or three before you're out on your ear

Yeah unfortunately it looks like my only option. The implied status should buy me time and hopefully ill get approved for the IEC in the mean time. Im hoping it doesn't effect the IEC app but sure its my only bet bar going home and coming back again.

It sucks but it's all I can do

Can you get your work to do an LMO?

    Hi Tonto86,

how did you fare with the visa situation, I’vegot under 3 weeks left on mine and am beginning to panic. Did you change to temporary resident visa?

doconne, are you working at the moment? Because if not, just apply before your current visa expires to change it to a tourist visa. You can do it online for $75 on the CIC website. That'll keep you in the country while you wait for your new IEC to come through (assuming you have a new IEC on the way - if not then you're pretty much cooked)

Hi COYVB, thanks so much for the response. I am working but its a low skilled admin job so I don't think the LMO would work - in any case I want the least hassle in staying even if it means I can't work for a week or two while I wait for the IEC to come through.

Just one more question is this the Tourist Visa you are talking about? http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/apply-how.asp Have you done this yourself - does your status change upon expiry of your visa or does it change as soon as the tourist visa is granted?

    Thanks in advance!

this is the one here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/cpp-o-apply.asp

you basically apply for that and the second you make the application you get implied acceptance. i had to do it actually in february temporarily because i had some plans change due to a death in the family and had to stick around for 2 weeks longer than my visa was for. I had an LMO but didnt want to waste those 2 weeks, plus a week back in ireland, when i could just apply as a tourist and take the time off work (which, since im my own boss, is very easily done). so i applied for the tourist visa - i still haven't heard back from CIC as to whether it was accepted or not, and im already back in the country and on a new work permit. I think i applied about a month ago - so you'll get at least that guaranteed. It comes with implied acceptance too, but you absolutely cannot work if you don't wanna take a big risk

So just to clarify as soon as I submit the application for the tourist visa its implied acceptance that I'm a tourist, my status is changed and so cannot work? If so should I wait until closer the expiration date?

So you never heard back from CIC about the tourist Visa. Did they ask you about it when you re-entered the country with the new work permit?

Thanks so much - I really appreciate your help!!

I believe it only kicks in when your other one expires, as you've still got a work permit up til that date. And hope, never heard anything, either through the mail or from the immigration officer

Took close to 7 weeks to process our application for tourist visas.
They just arrived out of the blue in the mail one day
Fecking LMO got approved the day after that! but at least meant we were legal for the duration of the wait anyways

Yeah, once the application is in you're covered anyway

I looked into applying for a work permit extension so I could keep working. From what I figured it would technically work but would be very risky. The immigration officer would check your status when processing your new IEC. They could decide your implied status was invalid and not approve your IEC.

As the guys said, apply for a tourist visa, implied status will kick in when your current expires. You can't work but it'll buy you time.

After 2 years in Canada my visa expired yesterday :(

I had a 'real' job in Vancouver for most of time here but moved to a ski resort town to run out the rest of my time. My most recent job didn't entitle me to be sponsored so that's it for me.

I will be spending 3 weeks travelling around before I go home and have not applied for a visitor visa. I realise this isn't ideal but for the hefty cost of 75bucks and lots of paperwork I've taken this chance. Anyone else done this? I have some friends who have.

I realise this may cause problems with me if I ever return to Canada in the future.

You can apply to change your status within 90 days of expiring but it may cause you some problems in the future that you let it laps.

Get your app in online, its not hard to do, only one form to fill out. You will need digital passport photo as well as proof of funds or financial support.

I'm in the same boat so this thread has been a great help.

My visa doesnt expire till September but I want to stay.

    Can I just re apply?

When should I approach my employer for LMO if I get refused ?

If you change your status to tourist can you work still?

    Approach them soon.
LMOs can take up to 16 weeks to process

No, and if you do you run the risk of being kicked out and not allowed back

Were you on an IEC visa? If so you had to apply when they were released in January. They're all gone now so you've to wait til next year. LMO or CEC are your best options now. You'll only get an LMO if you have specialist knowledge or ability and the company can show that a Canadian is unavailable to do your job. So if you're working in service or a low paid job, you won't get it. CEC is available to anyone who has worked in Canada for a year, but again it all comes down to the type of work you do. It also focuses on education and experience as well, so if you can bring a decent standard of ability to the work force, they'll look favourably upon you. If you spent the year working at Walmart or in a bar, you won't get it

Ouch. When was that? For ours we put in a cover letter saying that we needed it ASAP because my absence negatively affected the performance of the company, and therefore our ability to generate money for the government in taxes. Got it back 5 weeks to the day after sending it. Though now since we've done one already, we're eligible to the ALMO which expedites things

Sent at the start of August not much happened for a long time.
It was a new company and they were ineligible for an ALMO which sucked mightily
