Hi all, I am looking to buy a second hand diesel car (previously only had petrol) for under €2,000, and preferably under 1.6l. Can anyone offer any advice as to which make/models would be the best to look out for? Thanks!

Not a lot of choice in that price bracket for a 1.6D apart from a diesel saxo if you can find one or a early 90's vw.

Any reason it needs to be under 1.6? a lot of the time the larger engines can be more economical

the renault megane comes in 1.5 diesel...

The main reason I thought to go under 1.6 was that I was told it would be more economical, and to save on tax and insurance...? I currently have a 1.4 petrol car and find it expensive to run. I haven't really found any information on the older model diesel cars that would be in my price range regarding fuel economy, reliability etc...Or IYO would it be better to go for a 1L petrol?

    Any information valuable!

It all depends on the amount of miles and type of mileage your doing. Is it a lot of short journeys or long journeys? Is it mainly in town or on national roads/ motorways? This will allow people to help you determine what suits your needs. Although diesel is all the rage at the minute it's not always the most economical option

The usage would vary quite a lot, with the most use around the town, 10km per day (average), then on national roads, 30-60minute journeys 6-8 times per month and seldom motorway journeys (1-4 hours) 3x per year.

Sounds like petrol is the way to go so, if the 1.4 is proving too expensive to run maybe have a look at a 1.2, a saxo, punto, fiesta would be worth considering

    Great, thanks for the advice!!

Small capacity diesels are only really around about 10 years and half decent ones will still cost above your budget because they are in demand for the same reasons you want one. You may get a Peugeot 307 1.4 HDi but I don't think I would fancy my chances on a €2k one.

You have better chance of finding something like a 10 year old 1.9 TDi Skoda Octavia or Seat Leon/Toledo within your budget and just suck up the motor tax on it. Either that or just stick to a petrol car and spend the extra money on fuel.

@bazz26, IYO would you get the fuel economy/reliability out of a 1.9 diesel engine to warrant the extra spend on tax/insurance?

I suggest you really sit down and do your sums and figure out exactly what economy your current car gets you. That 2000 you're looking to spend on a diesel will by a lot of fuel.

If your car has only become uneconomical of late, then perhaps there's something up with it.

Not if you're driving 10km per day. Car won't even be warmed up.

Diesel? 1.6? Under 2k? How about an Opel Vectra with a 1.7TD, its 1688cc.....

    Or a Pug 106 1.5D?

Not very exciting stuff is it....

It all depends how new/old the car is tbh, I had a little 1.1 punto & when I moved up to my 2.0 integra I used as much fuel, older car to newer car, so it all depends what you're driving now & what you plan on moving to.

As was siad I think you need to sit down & do all your sums before you go off & cahnge your car based on some 'advice' you were given.

I currently have a 1996 1.4ltr seat ibiza which has served me well but I really think it is time to move on now(I changed the gearbox and now the revs are running higher and little nuances like that).
The next car that I would purchase I would hope to have for least the next 4 years but must be more economical. I currently get around 35miles/gallon...

The car is old, so changing for that reason alone is fair enough. But if you've put a good bit of money into it already, I would wager that the over revving issue could be something very simple to fix.

35mpg around town is not bad either to be honest. I would be surprised if a 1.9 diesel would do much better.

It might be worth seeing if it's a simple cheap fix to get the Ibiza back running normally and then see if you can get some more money together to get a car that will last you 4 years.

What about the Isuzu Gemini 1.5D or 1.5TD or the Daihatsu Charade diesel or the Daihatsu Sirion 0.8 or 1.0 petrol?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭corkgsxr

iv a 1.6 hdi 2007 berlingo and before a few mods my average was 36 mpg. even now its just over 40 mpg

personally id never buy smaller than 1.9/2l diesel again.

too small a engine under too much pressure.

    herself had a 02 2l d4d avensis and driving 10k a day it was still doing 44mpg.

and it has 205k miles on it.

    small diesels are hateful things.
