Right turns out that since the new model in 2008 that they no longer come seperately - you have to buy a cylinder Head cover (about €350)!! Seems a bit odd to me. Guy I spoke to seemed to think it unusual to change these now - seemed to think they can be cleaned up and good to go?? I'm way out of my comfort zone here and obviously don't want to spend money unnecessarily but don't want to take costly shortcuts either.

    Any advice appreciated.

Go to another dealer parts dept. and get someone who knows what they are talking about. The above is horse sh!te and you are dead right to want to 'service' this item given the trouble they can potentially cause.

It was confirmed by a second garage - both BMW dealers - seemingly this is the case of the facelift model brought in in 2008

I don't understand? You've been told that you need a new cylinder head cover in order to replace the breather? Not so on any other 320/520d I've come across. Did you try the likes of bmwfans.info and look at your specific engine parts catalogue? Just pop in the final 7 characters of your VIN to see whats what.

I'll try to be as clear as possible. Mechanic asked me to source him a new breather filter as he is replacing the turbo for me. I contacted a BMW dealer seeking the part. They told me after I gave them my reg and Chasis No. that my car is one of the new/facelift models (can't remember the exact term he used) introduced in 2008 and that the breather filter no longer comes seperate - so if i want to replace it I have to replace the whole cylinder head cover (cost roughly €350). A second BMW dealer confirmed this..

The term is LCI - a bit of googling suggests this is 100% correct - http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/f15/2007-e60-520d-no-crankcase-breather-t94957/
Yours must have the new N47 engine which has a breather that is non-replaceable and contains no filter. It is built into the cam cover. This engine only came out in 2007 so yours must be quite a late car?
The biggest difference, by far is that this engine is all aluminium whereas the old one has a cast iron block. The air filter, I believe, sits in a separate box rather than being part of the cam cover. If this sounds like your engine then your mechanic is correct and the engine breather is not a replaceable item.
