Fridgefreezer stopped working

    hi i have a hotpoint fridge freezer , probably bout 8 to 10 years old. couple of days ago.the compressor stop humming and i could here a click bout every five mins but compressor still not coming on,compressor is warm but not vibrating. when i plug it out for a while and pug it back in it clicks and compressor starts but it turns off again in 5 seconds.both the fridge and freezer have now defrosted completely, read up on u tube bout taken off relay and shaking it and it would rattle if it was not working,nearly broke the thing trying to get it off but when i did there did not seem to be any rattle, is it worth purchasing a multimeter to check the compressor and could it be anything else.was thinking of getting someone to look at it but thinking the cost to have a look at it, i would be better off buying a new one,any advice would be greatly appreciated?
