Yes you will still be insured but third party only. The consequence is €1000 fine for no driver and €1000 for no L plates if applicable. However, I know a lot of people who drive and have never been caught, heck I never even see a garda car on the road as it is. The only occasion that i have ever been asked to produce a driving licence by a garda was after an accident when another car drove into me.

While they will pay out third party costs you can be sure they will then pursue you for these afterwards. You'll also be flagged and will find it very difficult / expensive to get insurance again after.

you meet the requirements to be legally insured and on the road but you leave yourself exposed to the Insurance Company coming after you to repay anything they may have to fork out for as already said.

The other consequence is that you may kill someone... get some lessons in first at the very least

Well you will be driving otherwise in accordance to your license and apart from the above mentioned fines, your car can be taken off you as well.

How often this happens is a discussion for a different thread all together.
