What age of car are you looking for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 521 ✭✭✭disco girl

Between '00 and '05 (hopefully) depending on the price.

Would I be better off going for private sale or going to dealer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 482 ✭✭Matthewjohn

Private, and I'd go for the yaris they're great cars.

Most denfinatly a Yaris is the car to go for.

Imo if buying an older car it's better to buy private as the car is usually cheaper to buy and dealers won't give you much warrenty on anything old so your not really gaining anything there.

But I still wouldn't dismiss a dealers car if it was in better condition than a private example and was not overpriced.

You'll pay for the privilege of owning the Yaris.

If I got a clean low mileage Getz I'd take it.

Nothing wrong with either though and Yaris will be more desirable when it comes to selling

I do like the yaris alright, had a panda up until recently and they seem quite similar. Is there anything funny I should be looking out for i.e mileage too low etc...there are some private ads that seem to be dealers in disguise!

Yaris's attract a high price compared to others but they are great cars. Depending your mileage, the petrol version will drink it on motorway's. Don't even think of the 1.0L for motorway work or high mileage. Get the diesel if you can. Very rare and will certainly hold their value. Just check the service history. Low mileage and full service record would be high desirable. Try get to the closer end of 2005. The model changed in 2005.

Not really a huge amount to go wrong in them. The only thing I've ever replaced on one was a water pump and that had massive mileage.

It would only be used really for the school run, shopping etc....

I'd recomment the Yaris OP, I have one in the 1.0L guise and really like it. It's nippy (as much as a 1.0l can be :pac:), economical (I get around 6.5L/100Km at 100/110Kph and about 7/8l per 100 at 50 in the city) and small so is very easy to park.

She is looking for a run around, suggesting a diesel is madness, she'll also pay a premium for one. As for the economy at motorway speeds, I get about 8/9 L per 100Km at about 120Kph.

EDIT: All indicated consumption was according to the trip computer.

You could easily pay 2 grand for a 00 yaris privately. The Getz isn't a bad car, but if you buy into the reliability, low tax, resale value etc then the yaris is the one to go for. You'd get an 05 Getz for 2 grand which is hard to ignore.

I have seen an 05 Getz for €2,600...

If it needs a timing belt you'll need to budget for that.

I have the P1 in a 1L and the new body in a Diesel (1.4L). The P1 does about 4.5L/100km and the Diesel does 6.5L/100km. Not a hugely fair comparison but thats a massive difference.

The 1L is certainly not fuel efficient on motorways or anything north of 100km/h. Its damn noisy at those speeds too :) Its certainly not doing 9L/100km. Its far closer to 6L/100 at best. All those calculated by odometer and fuel readings, at least in my experience. I'd do 140km a day in the P1 occasionally. Going by a 45L tank, I make the average is 36MPG (~6.5L/100km)

Granted the diesel would be a premium but if your doing any sort of mileage it would be a vastly superior car and would hold its value for years. Even 1999 petrol Yaris's go for €1000+ these days which is fairly impressive in that bracket. The Diesels are hens teeth but worth it in my eyes. Just wanted to throw it out there for consideration!

When would the belt need to be done? It says it has 103,000km on the clock so should it have been changed already?

It would have been changed, likely around the 60000 mark so if it wasn't done since it needs changing.

You know all of the calculations you have down show the petrol to be better? :)

Timing belt on the Getz is 80km or 5 years I think.
    Don't assume its been changed.

You know all of the calculations you have down show the petrol to be better? :)

The petrol averages 36MPG (6.5L/100km) for over the previous 3 fills. And thats a figure for this and the previous car (At least 5 years of driving them) Use it on a motorway daily and it seriously drinks juice. The 1.0L is for around town, nothing more.

This line is garbage, should be opposite. My apologises:

The Diesel does anywhere between 42 and 52MPG (4.5L/100km on the good end) over the entire range even with motorway miles. Its happy at 120km/h+ as opposed to the P1 where 120km/h is topping out. Its a very efficient car in my eyes.

Some (if not all) of the Yarises have timing chains.

I had a 1 litre petrol Yaris of the vintage you're looking at for several years. It was a great trouble-free little car.

The 1.0L is exactly what she needs, for running around town. No need for a diesel. I'm also pretty sure the diesel will be worse (economically/reliability wise around town) compared to the petrol

Yeah think I'll be going with a 1lt, don't mind whether it's a newer looking model or not, kinda like the old ones....and it seems to have a highish driving position which I like.

I was faced with the same decision last year..I went for a getz very reliable economical with a low dashboard that makes them seem a lot bigger..the same rules apply with either a yaris or getz..low mileage more important. Ive had toyotas before and swear by them but very expensive second hand..compared to the getz which are very reliable..just look around and see how many of them are on the road..tons...so you will be able to pick one up..a shop run car...

Wouldn't give someone 3k for a 2001. A 1999 for example can be got in pristine condition for circa €1k. Granted its 2 years in the difference but its essentially the exact same car, and at that age 2 years is nothing in my eyes.

EDIT: To be fair to the seller there however, the average price of a 2001 Yaris (irrespective of engine size) is about €2800.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 taylorguy

....no way that money with 80k miles on it. for your budget mileage is the most important thing, ignore the year.

i had a 00 yaris, black 1.0l. Beautiful little go car that could do anything. we loved it, but had to change because of driving on the m50 everyday - one it was killing consumption, 2 - you'd worry about noise and being hit - and exploding. seriously, it feels frail.

Ours was in pristine mechanical condition and the only issue was the bodywork had dings in it. no knocks, just dings. it had 70k miles.

you wouldnt believe the offers we had on it. i was so angry. i bought it for 2300 euros, and managed to sell it for 1300.it broke our heart that such a nice thing was only worth that much.

i had originally advertised for 1800. it was funny how people who came to see it would abuse you (as well as on adverts), that you had the audacity to advertise this car for 1800.

till now i regret selling it, but unfortunately needed the bigger engines for longer travel and safety. We sold it in 2012 - june.

in summary: 3k is mental money for this.

2900-150tax(till 2014)=2750, not exactly "3k", and showing up with 2500 will probably get you the car. Not a steal but OK, if the car is.

Three weeks ago I saw a '99 1L Yaris at a dealer's lot for 1700, took it for a decent spin and upon return presented the dealer with my '00 1L Micra as a trade in. He offered me 500 and I took it without looking underneath the Yaris, without opening the bonnet etc and without any haggling.

Thus I swapped a newer hairdryer for an older one and paid 1200 on top of it.

    Here is why:
The Micra had 150k on it, would have needed at least 400 in repairs (including welding some rust) to pass the NCT and generally did not instill confidence.
The Yaris on the other hand had 80k but drove like new and the dealer did make a good impression and NCTed the Yaris for me 3 months ahead of date so I got it NCTed for 15 months.

It is certainly to early to say for sure. When I scrapped my previous Micra, it was 19 years old while the Yaris hasn't even been around for 15 and I never even drove one before. But as I said, at 14 years old it drives like new, is more economical and a much better ride.
According to the description to this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnTlNLz9Iqc
if the P1 is half as good, it won't give any trouble until at least 200.000 miles. Thus at 70k, it is virtually new.

Spipov, you sold your car for just over 50% of its market value. It is not my opinion. I must have made it clear that I don't have one yet. That is what the P1 is currently traded for. But I will refrain from abuse.:D

Right lads, going to have a look at the car I linked to earlier in the thread, some time over the next few days. Is there anything I should be looking out for?

If its still for sale then its overpriced. Properly priced 00 and 01s usually sell within a day or two.
Best to keep looking on donedeal, filter out yariss and jump on any you see just added, get down there ASAP and don't hang about,

We bought a 00 23 minutes after it went on donedeal and the guy had 3 calls for the car while we were doing the test drive.

That ones been on donedeal 10 days which is a long time for a yaris.

Thanks Kesha, it's too far for me to get to. I have negotiated a good price with the seller ;)
