Private sales are illegal, a dealer with a TAN no. can sell a foreign reg. vehicle, but must pay the VRT before the buyer takes possesion.

You have more chance of winning the lotto than getting done for selling a unregistered car

Surely this would be an easy source of revenue for Customs?

Just phone up one of the countless adverts for UK reg cars, say you want to view it, then confiscate the car when you see it is at an RoI address with UK plates.

Why are they not doing this?

They mount checkpoints at the borders on a regular basis, maybe they should alternate between checkpoints and checking out DoneDeal adverts?

Plus, could they not tie in with the insurance companies and find out out who has a UK reg at an RoI address? Doesn't sound like rocket science to get this in place.

They already do that: if you take out cover on a UK reg car here, the ins co's already automatically tell Revenue if you haven't advised them of it's new Irish reg within 30 days of covering it.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Depending on whether the seller moved over from the UK or simply bought it overthere, there is also the documentation issue. An irish resident who simply bought in the UK and brought it back would not have a V5C in his own name (unless he supplied a false UK address, such as a family member's). Anyone buying a UK car in Ireland other than from the registered keeper has very little sense.

isn't it crazy that with massive unemployment they (we) don't take on loads of investigators for this and other matters such as benefit fraud and pay them a percentage of the savings they make for us! I reckon I could make a good living just on no tax/NCT alone!

A UK seller should have reregd. the car here when he moved, any car imported on change of residentcy can not be sold on for 12 mths. as VRT would be payable.
