Insensitive? Or Fair Game?

Earlier today I had Larry Gogan's Golden Hour. Ceannlínte Nuachta broadcast at 1:30 and one of the stories in that was the trial in Tokyo over the death of Nicola Furlong. Straight after this, the next song lined up was The Vapors - Turning Japanese. I just looked at my radio and thought, 'that was in bad taste on 2fm's part'. Now I'm sure that no offence was intended but there's a niggle in the back of my head saying I should lighten up, every song can offend someone somehow.
    What do you guys think?

    This too shall pass.

Just an over-reaction from you? I'd say the music is programmed well in advance and they'd have no idea what news is coming up.

Could so easily have been a track by the killers or the stranglers.

    Go with the flow, Dude.

In my opinion it was an unfortunate coincidence, no more than that.

Was it really bad taste? I know the song is called 'Turning Japanese' but there isn't anything in the song about a Murder or a Trial. I'm sure it wasn't deliberate.

Maybe you could send them a message (larry @rte.ie) and ask them about it, if it is still niggling at you?

I'm thinking unfortunate coincidence, as I said, I'm sure the producers meant no harm, and if no one from the family of the deceased heard it or took offence to it then that's that I suppose. It's not for me to lodge a complaint to RTÉ, it's for the family and if their OK with it or none the wiser then that's a good thing. Best to move on.
I did leave a note on 2fm's facebook noting my thoughts. Hopefully someone will note, and decide what best to do.
New day tomorrow and all that. Thank you everyone for not having a go at me.

    This too shall pass.

Some could argue that this thread discussion is equally insensitive at this time.

This kind of falls under the 9/11 bracket with the music and London bombing's any music with bombing/crashing were removed from the playlist, the same with TV ads. Not that there was many TV ad's or songs on the radio in either instances.

I think whoever programmed the music most likely wouldn't have known what the news stories were going to be when they were setting up the music.

The presenter should have spotted it and removed it. The lyrics are innapropriate in the circumstances. Maybe the show was voicetracked.

    Lads, it's Larry.

The Ron Burgundy of RTE, if it's on the script, he'll read it. And nothing more.

As regards the choice of song, it was slightly unfortunate but neither the presenter nor the person who set up the playlist can be held responsible in my view. The news is a variable that can't be accounted for, for the most part. It would be different if Tubridy had played it following a piece on the sad events in Japan, for example.
