Parking Fine Wrong Reg on ticket

I got a parking fine recently issued by the council. I went to pay it today and found that the car reg number on the Fixed charge notice that was left on my wiper is incorrect. It's out by one digit. Should I take my chances and not pay it and if I end up in court claim that the ticket was not issued against me?

For all I know, the ticket could have been issued to a different car and that driver could have placed the ticket on my wiper! Unlikely but possible!

The real question is "Did you park illegally?".

They are likely to have taken a photo and could re-issue the ticket.

My parking disk was 10 minutes over and yes I seen him taking a photo of the car. Still though..

Parking attendant produces photo in court and says "This is the car that I ticketed"

Judge turns to you and asks "Is this your car in the photo?"

    You reply: ........... ???

Well the fixed charge notice I have in my hand is for a different car. It's not my reg number. It's not up to me to correct the mistake of the Dyslexic that issued the ticket.

Try saying that in court and see how you get on

Try to correct the ticket - insist on it. It may be that they can't (computer says no) and will have to cancel it. Say you need the ticket to be right for work or something.

The risk is you have to pay up.

€40 ticket versus court (judge with bee in bonnet about parking fines that day), I'd pay the €40.

How is he going to be summonsed to court?
If the summons issues to the registered owner of the reg no. on the ticket, that owner will turn up and say I wasn't in xyz place that day. The photo is produced and he says not my car.

If the summons issues to the o/p then he is in difficulty.

    Thanks for the replies.

Parking ticket is now in the bin. As far as I am concerned it was either a mistake on the part of the council or it was some wiseguy putting his parking ticket on my wiper in the hope that I would pay it without checking the details.

Technically, my car was not issued with a parking ticket.

Ok, perhaps a bad idea to bin the ticket. I will hold onto it as evidence but I'm not paying it.

People get off on technicalities all the time...

Technically you car was issued with a slightly invalid ticket. That argument would likely get you somewhere in the UK. In Ireland, I suspect the recipient of the ticket will send it back, they'll review the photo and reissue you with a summons. At that stage, you won't get the discounted rate, I guess. You're an adult and can make your own mind up. (Btw, not on a high horse, my last ticket was only 3 weeks ago - I was 3 minutes late back to the car.)

I got a notice of intention to issue a summons once on the basis of non payment of a parking ticket that was one digit out from mine own.
( in this case neither i or my car had been in the location in question).

I had to give proof of my own car reg details to make it go away.........
